“Characters are a tool. History, altogether, is a tool, and tools are neutral until they're wielded. When you listen to a story, think about who is telling it. When you listen to a history, think about who it serves.”

Aiza has always wanted to be a knight, the highest military honor of the Empire. But born as a second-class citizen, a member of the once conquered Ornu people, becoming a knight is her only path to full citizenship. With war on the horizon, the Empire opens enlistment for Squire training, the first step to becoming a knight. Aiza’s family agrees only if she hides her background and now must navigate new friendships, rivals, and demanding superiors to complete her training to fight for nation in which she doesn’t truly belong.

A couple weeks ago I was feeling really worn out (still do actually) and needed to read something that easily grabbed my attention. I read this graphic novel in one sitting. It is so good; the art is wonderful, the characters are immediately lovable, and it is a fantastic depiction on colonization and some of its effects. I felt like the end was a little bit abrupt but that’s also the sign of a good story, I wanted more. It’s YA and even suitable for older middle grade readers so it’s a great option if this is a conversation you want to have with the young people in your life.

Solid story with pretty art. I did feel like the story went faster then I thought it would. I don't know if there is a sequel but the story does feel like there should be more to it.
