Want get haunted?

Ghost Eaters by Clay McLeod Chapman is a tale about a woman named Erin (a sympathetic wayward twenty something, trying to figure out her life) who learns her college sweetheart (Silas) died of an overdose - from a drug that allows folks to see the dead. The drug is called Ghost, which is a sort of psilocybin based drug that allows folks to see dead loved ones - and others, who feed off the users' high. Encouraged by her friend, Tobias, Erin takes Ghost in order to overcome her guilt and grief in relation to the death of Silas. Erin partakes in a pill-popping seance and from there, there is no going back for her. Convinced she has reconnected with Silas, her addiction grows and Erin's life spirals out of control. And in the end, she has to choose death or life. Which will it be?

This book is brutal, dark, snarky, sad, and terrifying. There are moments in this book that are truly bonkers (and not for the squeamish). I met Clay McLeod Chapman a few weeks ago and he warned me that this was going be wicked but I wasn't prepared. Ghost Eaters is about loss, addiction, and grim history. But it's also about trying to overcome pain and addiction. Chapman writes: "We need to find a better way to live with our ghosts. Ignoring them gets you nowhere....the only way to keep living is to acknowledge the past."

Ghost Eaters is an obsessive read. You'll get hooked. But fair warning: you'll see dead people.

While the writing style is not as cohesive as I'm used to, the plot was mind-bending. It often felt like you were along for the chaotic ride beside Erin.

I was really excited to start this book as it seemed the most original idea out of the books I picked up from the library that day. The prologue was…graphic, to say the least. A lot if people like that, though this seemed excessive. I almost refused to finish the book, but I was hoping that this scene proved necessary to the story.

My main criticism of the book is that it got to a point where it just felt the author was trying to hit a word count; the book itself is a total of 303 pages. What made it worse was I found a bevy of errors. These errors would have been caught by an editor in any other book.

That all being said, the story became predictable. I also feel the need to fact check at least one huge thing.

I got through the first portion of this book on a flight and then I accidentally left my book behind… I should’ve just stopped reading it then.
