Well this book is one big ouch. Distressing to find what those closest to us can allow us to do to ourselves. And to find what was lurking, hidden all along.

I have to say that part of my (extreme) disappointment came from the narration of the audible version of this story. Very excited to get ahold of a hardcopy of this one, I had a number of TBR titles stacked up ahead of this one... until seeing the audio version pop across my radar. Man, was this a mistake :(

Maybe just me, but I found the over the top narration, the voices, and some of the exuberance so incredibly grating. Painful. To the point of nearly quitting, multiple times. Knowing that I would never pick the book up at this point-- and really did want to see how the story and characters developed-- I pressed on and made myself finish it. And ended... still aggravated.

The story itself was not bad.
Taking aside my feelings for the narrator's efforts being incredibly off-putting, it might've rated a 3 for me. Maybe. (Man.. how could the narrator's guidance and prep and concept approach been so wrong??)

A couple parts made me wonder about Clay's characters and I struggled with them. Two of them struck me as a bit heavy-handed or hamfisted.. and whether he understood them. (The guys were also a bit off/abrasive to me too, so.. maybe it wasn't so much about ill-fitting character traits as much as his style and me just not caring for them.)

Glad that I stuck it out to see the story for what it was. Mostly.
Sad that it took time from other great potentials.
Then again, horror is not my genre. ... but even still... this one was a tough read for me.
