The extra .5 is because the premise is so bloody brilliant. And the story wasn’t bad either. The descriptions were deliciously and horrifyingly descriptive. I didn’t feel a huge pull to keep picking the book up, however. Not quite the white-knuckling tension I was hoping for. Some nice twists, though.
Creepy but way more like Trainspotting or something by Chuck Pahlaniuk (that's probably spelled wrong) than I expected.
Lost interest in the book. Will try again later
The description of this book promises a "terrifying supernatural page-turner," presumably about ghosts based on the fact that it's about a drug that makes you see the dead.
I didn't get any of that from what I managed to listen to. This was about addiction more than anything and there was nothing terrifying about it. No creepy atmosphere, uninteresting characters, no stakes, no depth.
It's also not what I would call a "page-turner" if the first 32% was this boring. I think page-turners are supposed to be gripping from the start, but I could be wrong.
The cover and the description really sold me something that wasn't there; at least not during the first 32% of the story. If it takes so long to get there, the road is boring, and I don't like the passengers I'm with, then I don't want it. So I'm getting out of the car.

I wanted to like this book. I tried to like this book. I failed. Ghost Eaters by Clay McLeod Chapman is about addiction. Erin’s ex has died and their friend Tobias claims to know how to bring him back. They must go to an abandoned house and perform a seance. They have to get “haunted” by taking a pill called Ghost. Desperate to see Silas again, Erin follows Tobias on this journey and her world falls apart. To start with, let me say that I listened to the audiobook and I did not enjoy the narrator. Elizabeth Rodgers grated on my nerves. The story itself is trying hard to be scary and all it succeeds at is being gross. It isn’t gory. But there is lots of bile. I didn’t think the “revenants” were depicted in a way that made them terror inducing. I found everyone in the book to be utterly dull and unpleasant. I didn’t care what happened to them. There wasn’t enough of a connection between Erin and Silas for me to believe that she would throw herself so heartily into this world. The story is scattered and there are pieces flung about that never get picked up again. The twists weren’t that twisty. I found myself thinking “I don’t like this book” while I listened to it. It feels like the author couldn’t decide what cliche to follow through with and so he included them all. At some point we randomly devolve into a orgy of cannibalism and so the answer was to set everything on fire? There were bits here that had potential and could have been polished from turd to gemstone maybe, but that effort wasn’t put into it. Terrible dialogue at times. The best thing it has going for it is the cover, which I do quite like. 1/5 stars. No thanks.

This was a wild ride. As much about addiction as it is ghosts, a truly haunting tale about is versus was, and how we're all haunted in our own ways.
There wasn't much happening, and I didn't like anyone in it. So many stupid decisions being made.
Graphic: Drug use, Toxic relationship, Vomit, Grief
Moderate: Abortion

I was expecting a story about love and addiction plus spooky ghosts and this book delivered really well. Bonus points for its Southern setting (deeply haunted) and the author's talent for terrifying imagery.
