Yozo, though highly pessimistic, provided some really interesting thoughts regarding society and the 'casual cruelties' of man. A food for thought situation, though the circumstances for such an interaction were usually very unsettling. I was never really triggered or repulsed during the book, but I could easily understand how others were. As for the misogyny, I think it was a mix of the time and intention. You're not supposed to root for Yozo, his thoughts and actions are purposefully off-putting with a touch of Japanese culture and norms at the time. I found the interactions he had with women interesting because it provided insight into how his brain worked (not spelled out for you since he's his own unreliable narrator, you kinda have to read between the lines, which I liked) and how he viewed everyone's place in the world. That said, the book was nothing stellar. I was intrigued enough to keep reading and looking forward to it, but I wouldn't say it was a memorable experience worth beyond 3 stars. Decent, not stellar.

I didn’t enjoy this one. There were some nice sentences and the end was good but in a way like - something is finally happening. The guy is a drunk and everything that happens throughout the book can’t change that. The exploration of why he became and outcast and of why nothing could change his situation in a meaningful way would strike me as something to explore, but the novel does not let me.
