‘Er bestaat een woord: ‘verschoppeling’. Kennelijk verwijst het in de wereld van de mensen naar de meelijwekkende verliezers, naar hen die verdorven zijn. Maar ik voelde me een ‘verschoppeling vanaf de geboorte’. Als ik iemand tegenkwam die door de samenleving werd bestempeld als een verschoppeling, stemde dat mijn hart altijd mild. Het stemde mijn hart zo mild dat ik me er zelf door liet meeslepen. Er bestaat nog een woord: ‘schuldbesef’. Hoewel ik in deze mensenwereld mijn hele leven heb geleden onder dit besef, is het ook mijn trouwe metgezel, als een echtgenote in goede en kwade dagen, en ondanks alle somberte maken we plezier, wij alleen met z’n tweetjes'
‘Zelfstandige naamwoorden worden allemaal opgedeeld in mannelijk, vrouwelijk en onzijdig, maar net zo goed is er een onderscheid nodig tussen komisch en tragisch. Stoomboot en stoomtrein zijn bijvoorbeeld allebei tragische woorden, en tram en bus zijn allebei komisch. Wie niet weet waarom dat zo is, is niet geschikt om over kunst te discussiëren.’

I considered what review to give this book, if I were to give one at all. I ultimately decided to give it a numerical value because the author published this book to be read and, by extension, to be judged.
On account of No Longer Human being semi-autobiographical and the character work being the most important, I don't feel the need to criticize specific plot points in the story.The events described are a cascade of horrible situations that Yozo fixates on and uses as evidence to judge himself. This disproportionate amount of misery is an intentional choice meant to portray mental illness, and a very effective one.
While this is not uncommon in the time No Longer Human was written, an issue I have with the book is that the misogyny can be gratuitous at times to a point where it's difficult to read through. Regardless, I recommend toughing through these parts because fully understanding the book would involve reading the whole thing. The epilogue redeems a lot of the book, but simultaneously makes it weak in other aspects.This section shows an outsider perspective on Yozo as a person, where the reader is reminded that the events described in the journals were exaggerated and that characters acted due to being unaware of Yozo's mindset. One issue I had was an explanation that Yozo's father was responsible for Yozo's behavior. I wish that there were more scenes with Yozo's father to make it clearer whether this is a genuine conclusion or another misunderstanding by other characters. However, the epilogue recontextualizes the story and affirms the reason why it was written.
No Longer Human is an overall great story that depicts the full grit of mental illness. It's a short book, but not a light read by any means.

god this was depressing, not in the same way dostoevsky is depressing, by which i mean in the relatable, almost romantic with tinges of hope kind of way. this was just flat out depressing. maybe i just don't vibe w japanese literature or maybe its just dazai himself. i very much prefer dostoevsky.
the main character only wants money to indulge in his self-destruction which is awful, and uses women and thinks rather poorly of them. attempts suicide twice. i dont shame addiction or depression or suicide but this character was just...horrible. theres ways to live with yourself and these situations, but this character just thrived in his own misery, making him very easy to despise.
had i read this much earlier while in my previous relationship, knowing it was my partner's favorite book at the time, i would have left MUCH sooner.
the main character only wants money to indulge in his self-destruction which is awful, and uses women and thinks rather poorly of them. attempts suicide twice. i dont shame addiction or depression or suicide but this character was just...horrible. theres ways to live with yourself and these situations, but this character just thrived in his own misery, making him very easy to despise.

There’s some interesting quotes and questions in there, but it’s basically his life with minor deviations. The biggest sense you get is his self-imposed alienation from society that gives interesting perspectives on society and crime/sin. Still it is mostly rambling through his life in a way that doesn’t draw you in very much
