I was definitely this sappy and in my head at 17. The over-done narration serves to get the reader back into a 17 year old head. And Wow with the sadness of it all.

I found Knowles' prose to be quite elegant and vivid, and as a reader, I appreciate that very much. Unfortunately, I cannot say I found the narrative to be particularly interesting. Some might even call it dull. The two main characters, Phineas and Gene, seem real enough, but their story is nothing to get excited about, and I'm still not sure what I was supposed to get out of this book.
