omfg?? totally did not expect the ending but anyways finny and leper supremacy and brinker can go die
Read this in high school and absolutely LOVED it....but all I remember was crying a lot & loving it - nothing else. Decided to revisit it 25+ years later....I'm left wondering what struck me so intensely about this book back then? It was okay, but I was hoping to rekindle my love for it & it was a bit underwhelming.
Read in middle school and i remember the ending being sentimental and emotional. The hard part was getting through the beginning but then it really does get better.
I could feel where this book was headed from the start. I think this is a book that I would have liked more if I'd read it ten years ago or with a high school or college literature class instead of just reading it on my own. Still, the story captures a particular moment in development where an adolescent is teetering on the brink between childhood and adulthood. Even so, I didn't love the characters and didn't end up caring much about their lives or their problems--maybe I would have been more gripped by the story when I was closer in age to the characters.
I was assigned this classic novel in late elementary school, and again in high school. At the first reading, and even the second, there was no real way for me to relate to the tension of World War II looming just after graduation for these young boys. At their New England boarding school, the junior class enjoyed one last summer of peace. During that easy time, they could almost pretend the war couldn't touch them.
The main focus here is the relationship between roommates Gene and Phineas. At first, it appears they are best friends. Yet it's more complicated than that. A split second decision will change everything, as these boys hover on the edge of growing up.

This book is surprisingly easy to make your way through and also thoroughly entertaining.
It tells a story about friendships and life during World War II and how despite not playing a part in the war or being anywhere near it, how utterly destructive and all encompassing war can be, especially for innocence.

It was a beautiful story and at times it was funny I loved it nonetheless, I just wish Gene was a more likeable character though
