I remember reading this for English 20-1, and I hated this book with a passion. I think it was because of the pacing, the characters, and the very fact that I could care less about the outcome. I just wasn't into his book, and so being forced to read it, analyze the crap out of it, and beat it until it died hardly helped me like this novel.
I won't recommend it. But, I feel like one has to attribute the fact that the more you beat somebody over the head with a book, the more they are going to resist it. And that was my case. Perhaps in different circumstances, I would have enjoyed it. Oh well.

If this book was remade into a touching coming of age movie it would probably be pretty good, but I don't think I would go see it.

There’s something very LGBT about this book. I mean knew it wouldn’t explicitly be that because it was written in the 50s but still. Definitely something fruity a foot. (Even if the author denies it. Sir read your own book. Be serious.) any ways I did really like the descriptions and imagery in this book. The author was very eloquent. I was apprehensive because I sometimes find older books hard to digest but this one wasn’t so bad. It did feel like there was not a lot going on at times and honestly I wish the feelings between the MC and his roommate were explored more because I feel like that would have been more interesting??? The length though was perfect any longer and I think it would have felt way to dragged out. Overall it was decent but I could definitely see how people would not like it

I remember viscerally hating this - I found it incredibly boring and I don't think anything really happened except a whole bunch of wank about being a moron and running and a paragraph lovingly describing a side character's butt. I don't even know.

Furthermore, it was for eighth-grade English. My teacher gave us a quiz on some random detail-bits, and I remembered little things like how many years had passed between Point A and Point Boring, and that somehow meant that I wasn't actually UNDERSTANDING the damn book (because it is of course impossible to have a sticky memory and still glean deeper meaning from one's reading), so Teacher and Teacher's Pet called me "petty" for the rest of the day. I totally cried when the Pet got in on it, but that was also because that week SUCKED - my aunt had died of cancer earlier in the week, and the day of the quiz was when I was leaving around noon to go to her funeral.

...I never actually review books, I just rant about their associated circumstances. Sorry.

The book was a great and quick read. It delves into human nature and each character is so unique and intriguing.

I would happily push Gene out of a tree

beautifully written... i love the honesty about being jealous and to a point of hating a best friend. i didnt drown in the world which is why i didnt love the book itself.. but the 4 stars is really for the level of writing. im sure if i read it or in a different time in my life i could have a stronger connection to it.
