One of the most heartfelt books you could read. This is the story of a hand raised pig and the relationships he makes and the insights he brings to those around him. Since this was back in the 1990s pet pigs weren't nearly as common so there was a learning curve as to how to care for an adult pig. I learned a lot and there are so many scenes that stick with me (I especially love the description of the town's elderly drivers and the calamity they inflict upon the town).
funny informative inspiring medium-paced

This memoir tells the story of the years that naturalist Sy Montgomery spent raising a much-loved and somewhat infamous pig named Christopher Hogwood.  It is part uplifting story about this unlikely pet and part educational about pigs and other animals and their habits and histories. I was recommended this book by a nurse who promised it would bring a smile to my face - and that it did.  I mean, they built a pig palace, had pig spa days, and collected leftovers from all over the community as they raised this pig. Sy is a really interesting person, who seemed to really enjoy the simpler things in life.  The last line of the book really summed it up for me: " A great soul can appear before us at any time, in any form... I'm keeping my eyes open."

I’ve always wanted a pig. Enjoyed reading about this one and his family.

The Good Good Pig
By Sy Montgomery
245 pages
non-fiction

I read the book The Good Good Pig, it was about a woman named Sy who decided to raise a baby pig. Christopher Hogwood was his name and he was the runt of his family, chris was a very small pig, he was called a "runt of the runts," but through the story he slowly started getting bigger until he was a normal sized pig. In this story it shows how one pig can bring a whole community together, and it is a wonderful way to remember the deceased Christopher Hogwood.
I gave this book 4 stars because I thought it was goo but a little bit slow at parts, my favorite character was Sy because of her love of animals. This book is very touching to anyone who love animals so I recommend it to animal lovers. This book has humor, sincerity, and general happiness which is what I like about it.

The author is a nature writer/hippie who lives in New England. She and her husband take in a pig--the run of the litter. He grows to a fine huge size and, though him, the author learns to connect with other people in her town and the community at large.

A true story about the most lovable pig since Wilbur from Charlotte's Web.

A lively tribute to a very special pig and how his presence impacted Montgomery and connected her to a greater community.

Pigs are intelligent and loving animals, most of whom will never live beyond a year. They are just as smart, if not smarter than dogs and reading about Christopher Hogwood will make you think twice about eating pork(or at least about eating less of it).

If you're an animal lover, you will love this book! You will undoubtedly shed tears, but you will leave with a greater appreciation for animals and especially pigs.

I enjoyed this book! 3.5 stars. I also have a pet pig and laughed my way through a lot of the book because Christopher Hogwood was so relatable.

Do NOT read this book if you think you are going to get a science lesson about pigs. (I read a negative review of the book and that person clearly thought they were getting a hard nonfiction book about pigs). There are some facts here and there to help you understand pigs. This book is as much Sy’s (the author’s) story and experience as the pig’s. The premise of the book is all about how adopting a pet pig changes her and her husband’s life by connecting with others in their community and beyond.

The author writes heartwarming and heartbreaking sections. This is a book about a pig’s humanity. It is wonderfully hilarious despite seeming a bit rambly, specifically in the last third of the book. Still, I am big fan of Sy Montgomery and her passion for all animals shines through in her writing.
