This book made me happy with my decision not to eat my fellow mammals.

I picked this book up for a dollar at Big Lots and it is a tale of what happens when you let a pig live past the six months most do. There are plenty of facts about pigs that you probably didn't know mixed into this story about the charming Christopher Hogwood but it doesn't feel heavy handed. If you are feeling a bit bucolic, pick it up.

After losing my 12yr old bearded dragon a few months ago perhaps this was not the best time to read this book. But oh my! What a book. If you love animals on a level that the average person finds odd; this book is for you. No one else will understand the connection, the soul, the heart of the tale of Christopher Hogwood & how he touched the lives around him.

A touching, easy to read memoir of Sy Montgomery’s life with her pig Christopher Hogwood. Christopher Hogwood brought joy to many people and helped connect people and nurture friendships with his docile nature. The biggest takeaway from this book, for me, is to be kind to others and kind to yourself, and to relish the simple pleasures of life.

Sweet story of a pig and the impact he had on his owners and the whole community.

This is the incredibly sweet and entertaining story of a very special pig. Montgomery is a nature writer who has always felt more at home with animals than with other humans, but when she adopts Christopher Hogwood, a runty piglet, she begins to make connections with other people she never would have expected. Christopher is an endearing pig, and this is a fun, fast read that made me much more well-disposed towards pigs than I had been in the past.

A friend gave me this book to read while recuperating.

It was a sweet story, and the pig was definitely a character. It was fun to see the photographs that were included.

I did feel that the author spent too much time focused on herself, however.

This was the perfect book to finish off my 2020 reading challenge with. It was funny, endearing, and oh-so-delightful. Now, which of Sy Montgomery's books to read next... because I simply can't get enough!

A very sweet, funny story about a life well lived. This is the story of Christopher Hogwood, the pig.

According to the author, is very unusual for a pig to get to live out it’s natural lifespan. It’s hard to even estimate how long a pig’s lifespan is because they so rarely get to live it.
Isn’t that a heart breaking thought?

Christopher was a special, incredibly lucky pig.
He was born at a time when there was a baby boom on his farm. There were so many runts in his litter that his mother couldn’t feed him. So, his owners (yes, owners, as the pigs were being raised for slaughter) asked their friends Sy and Howard if they wanted him.

I relate to Sy. She’s a major animal lover. When Christopher came to her house, he didn’t have owners anymore he had a family.

Sy always related more easily to animals than people. It’s no wonder. Consider that her father was her hero but when Sy married a Jewish man her family disowned her. I’m so ticked off for Sy at how hard she had to work to keep them in her life and how they still never accepted her husband.

But animals love unconditionally and Christopher could always remind you of this.
He was a cute little piglet when they brought him home.
He slowly grew.
As he got older, and larger, his started forming connections with neighbors.

Restaurants in the area brought Chris their extra food. The neighbor children loved to wash and pamper Chris. Friends and family visited him.

And Sy and Howard always did the absolute best for him.

It is through Chris that they made new friends themselves.
Chris was a loving, pure soul and he brought light to all who knew him.

The end of the story was very sad, as they can always potentially be in a story about an animal. But this book focuses on a life well lived and a special soul.

I enjoyed it. I could have dealt with less descriptions of slop buckets. I don’t need to know everything Christopher ate in his lifetime. But I appreciated the random animal facts included, I liked the author’s style of writing, and I like knowing how much Christopher was loved.
