Charlotte’s Webb is my favorite children’s book so I was thrilled to read the first chapter to discover that instead of a young girl, Sy is an adult woman who adopts a runt pig. Sy writes a beautiful story of the extraordinary goodness that comes from this pig’s life. This pig, Christopher Hogwood. The story is funny and insightful and may have you soul searching and questioning societal norms.

I great book about a good good pig! I picked this up after devouring Montgomery’s book How to be a Good Creature (5 ⭐️).
I took off .25 because I was so disappointed in all of the unnecessary descriptions of women as “skinny” and references to their weight, unrelated to Christopher, that amounted to this odd importance on women’s size. Additionally, the use of the word “retarded”. It’s probably in part a product of the time it was written in the early 2000’s but it struck me nonetheless.

I picked this book up after reading Montgomery's most recent book, The Soul of an Octopus. It took me a bit to get into this one. Unlike Montgomery, I'm not sure I've ever felt like pigs were "adorable" and I certainly didn't realize how intelligent they are. But I really appreciated this book. It was fascinating to see the way Montgomery's pig brought the community together and taught so many people about love and joy.

I love this book! It was such a a love story to her relationship with her pet pig. The only thing I did not like about the book was the repeated references to shamans and seeking out shamans.

This is a fun memoir that feels like you’re sitting in the garden chatting with a friend. But as a farmer, it’s hard to ignore the obvious issues with animal mismanagement. The pet pig was clearly loved but still managed to escape quite often and grace (terrorize) the neighborhood, putting himself at risk of injury, theft, or death. If that didn’t stress me out so much this would be a solid 4.25 stars.
