“Thayer Holmes has branded himself on me. And I know, without a doubt, that whatever this is, whatever we become, if we grow and flourish like the wildflowers behind our houses, or crash and burn, it won’t matter because when I’m old and gray, lying in bed thinking about my life, he’ll be the best part.”
My favorite kind of books are romances that grip you and wreck you. The love stories of the ages. The angsty, slow, torturous burns, but beautiful in their own rite, love stories. They speak to my heart and soul, and of course when they are mixed with a bit of steam, that physical chemistry, it makes for something incredible. This book describes impeccably a bond that seals you together with another, a seared connection. I am constantly looking for books that make me FEEL while reading. Well let me introduce you to The Confidence of Wildflowers, book one of a duet. This book all encompasses a war between love and grief, and it’s beautiful.
This is an age gap romance between Thayer and Salem. Salem is definitely conflicted and confused. She’s eighteen, has a boyfriend (Caleb), they are intimate, and maybe they are in love, but their relationship is a constant roller coaster. Why? Because Thayer entered the picture, and made Salem question everything. The attractive, forbidden, older neighbor. The newly divorced, and single dad, Thayer. She thinks her attraction to him shouldn’t be valid considering he is an older man, especially since she was sexually abused by her father, but yet she falls hard. Not only does she love and care for Thayer, but she has grown attached to his son too.
This first book is wrenching! It will WRECK you with emotions! Lust, love, confusion, longing, happiness, grief, and sorrow. Salem and Thayer are both growing but in completely different ways. They are navigating the waters, and there are so many highs and lows! The cliffhanger got me, but I am ready for book two to repair me!

“Wildflowers are strong. Resilient. They can grow under most conditions. I want to be like that.”
18-year-old Salem has just graduated high school but wonders how others have their future figured out because she certainly feels happy with her cat, living at her mom's house and working at her mom's story, with little to no plans in going to college, despite of multiple attempts to hop on the college route by her boyfriend Caleb. A new neighbor named Thayer who is 31 moves next door and seems to be angry at the world, and Salem aims to befriend him by bringing him cupcakes. Salem and Thayer are very aware of their age gap, but that doesn't make the attraction they have for each other vanish.
After I finish the book I grew a little anxious with that ending.. I don't understand why authors do this to us!!! Worth to mention that there are a few trigger warnings including abuse, death, and sexual assault.
I loved how real this felt, the story was written with characters that have flaws, have a dark past and I enjoyed how everything slowly came about. There is some spicey moments throughout the story but I think what outstands the most is the romance from the characters.
Salem and Thayer are both forced to experience trauma in a different way but nevertheless those events mark them for life. I appreciate how there wasn't much of a toxic relationship, and the fact that Caleb and Thayer are both so wonderfully qualified for Salem yet her heart only beats for Thayer and Thayer only. I feel like if I were in Caleb's shoes, I wouldn't have put up with so much but that guy is one in a million.
That slow burn was really killing me but what broke me the most was how I can see it being a real possibility that Thayer's actions are justified by grief, I mean it's REAL tough what he went through but really, after everything was fitting into pieces, I just couldn't.
Written in Salem's POV, I devoured every second of her relationship with Thayer because he sounds like the perfect man, I feel like if it was written in 2 POV everything would've been predictable.
There are a few spoilers, so skip them if you are not into spoilers.
*By 28% When the three of them are having dinner (Salem, Salem's mom and Thayer) and Salem just sends her mom up to bed just like that as if she's the parent. And I believe this was way before the mom was showing any signs of illness.
*I noticed a typo by 70% "I know, honey." She gives me hand a slight squeeze. I think she meant to say 'she gives MY hand a slight squeeze'
*I couldn't get over the "open your mouth" and he spits on her?? Idk? Is that attractive nowadays or am I boring???? Idk, many many thoughts on this lol

The age gap was so unnecessary as well as the details with the smuttyness. I wish it would have been tamer but the story line is great.
Salem and Thayer give me all the heart eyes. I was definitely not prepared for the plot twist at the end that left me sobbing. But I really just want to say wow this was hot and I may totally have a new favorite trope in age-gaps. *insert drooling emoji here*
I could not stop with this story holy shit I need the second one NOW
This story gutted me. It was unpredictable and emotionally charged. It literally left me speechless.
This book has some intense triggers which can't be totally specified without giving away MAJOR spoilers. So I'll say this, your mental health matters and proceed with caution. There are some heavy subjects dealt with in this story. It's worth it and beautiful but also so tough.
I was on the fence for the first half of this book. I struggle with age gaps when the FMC is 18 because they're just soo young and this FMC said a few times that she's not like other girls and I dislike that a lot. But I'm so glad I kept going.
This isn't one of those mushy feel good romances that are linear and simple. There is a lot of pain and trials through the duet. I didn't always agree with the decisions made but their story was still beautiful.
