Dear God, I had to absolutely claw my way through this book.
There’s using a nonlinear narrative, and then there’s taking a story with multiple threads and presenting it all in one big clusterfuck with no coherence or rhyme or reason whatsoever. I’m a fan of stream-of-consciousness writing to an extent, but this was just an absolute tangle of plot points and opinions that was near impossible to make sense of—and when you DO make sense of it, you discover just… a trivial marital matter. That’s it. Nothing to see here, folks. We know from the beginning the broad strokes of how everything unfolds, so I don’t really see how any of what materialised was supposed to catch me unawares.
Should’ve DNF’d on page 50 like I wanted to. RIP my brain

This book is pretty dark. Plot-wise I kept thinking that this is what "The Age of Innocence" would have looked like with a few wrong turns--its flip-side. The style is interesting (experimental at the time, I understand) and it was a little difficult to follow at times--springing back and forth in time, contradictory statements, etc. As a result this book may be "important", but that is different than "classic" in my opinion.

Något i berättarens historia skaver illa redan från början och ju längre den tragiska historien rullas upp desto mer opålitlig känns berättaren. Är han verkligen det oskyldiga offer för omständigheterna som han först synes vara? Det här gillar jag!

It's a classic, great example of an unreliable narrator.
