You know why I hadn't read this yet? Because a girl can only read so many books about the hypocrisy of turn of the century upper class society. No joke. Rich people make a lot of rules and don't actually follow any of them.
I appreciate his chatty story-telling and I somewhat enjoyed the book for that. I might have enjoyed it more were it the first of its genre for me.
Now then, I am forever done with stories where the women are cold and calculating and magically aware of and responsible for everything, while the men are poor naive creatures full of good intentions but at the mercy of their passions and not to blame for any of their actions.

This was not an easy read, and I didn't particularly enjoy it. Due to the former, I didn't read it very carefully and wasn't following closely, which likely contributed to the latter.

i can't tell whether this is more sad or salacious, either way i hate that adam was right about me enjoying it
Beautiful setting, charming narrator (the story is told through diary entries). The first 100 pages felt as though it was building towards an Austen-esque romance but this wasn’t the case. I liked the main character & it was nice that the characters didn’t all get what they wanted in the end. Some of the plot is tediously slow and I was glad when I finally finished the book.
Might be good to re-read this book one day as I'm sure I'm missing some of its brilliance. It started out great and then I just got bored of it and it became work to finish.
enjoyed the style, but honestly I got so fucking *bored* of the constant excuses being made for men who were, at best, mediocre.
