I’ve been a loved of DBT for over 10 years and still believe it saved my life. Of course as soon as I saw this book I had to read it. It was amazing to hear how similar Marsha’s journey had been to mine. To know she had been where I am. This thought-provoking (and I mean that) book even explains some of the dbt skills. The only thing I wish I knew going in is that she is a very spiritual person and talks a lot about that and god in the book.

Honestly, it's clear that Linehan is a researcher and clinician - not a writer. This isn't the smoothest prose. But Linehan's story is moving and fascinating. If you're interested in clinical psychology, or the relationship between spirituality and mental health, this is definitely worth a read. Linehan gives context for key principles of DBT through her life experiences - particularly the dialectic (balance) between acceptance and change, exemplified by her own spiritual dialectic between Zen Buddhism and Catholicism. If I wasn't convinced before that DBT skills are life skills for everyone, I am now. I'm particularly inspired by her reconciliation with her family and her commitment to lifelong found family.
