Another really enjoyable and interesting book by Oliver Sacks. The clinical tales in "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" were a bit more unusual and intriguing than this collection, but these were fascinating cases nonetheless.

Love Oliver Sacks. He writes with so much empathy for the afflicted, or in better terms, neurodivergent. Yes, some terms are outdated, but the book is outdated. For its time I think it stands up very well, and it's always valuable to have insight on various conditions from someone who spent a good deal of quality time with them, not simply observing them and questioning them, but getting to know them and having fun with them.

This book made me profoundly uncomfortable. Not because of any of the medical conditions presented or the individuals who are Sachs's subjects...but there's something voyeristic about the way he writes about the individuals and conjectures about their inner worlds without really involving them in those discussions. Intellectually interested and certainly a window on different experiences, but a book that approaches all of these conditions as "otherness".

my favorites were “an anthropologist on mars” and “a surgeon’s life.” some of the language around the autism case studies is outdated, but overall great storytelling yet again by oliver sacks
