done! finished my 20th book of the year just under the wire. i'd resolved to read one non-fiction book this year but this one ended up being my third. for a collection of essays on people with neurological disorders it was very readable and not as dry as it could have been. some people's stories are more fascinating than others (the colorblind artist, for instance) and some just seem to get a bit repetitive (like 'the last hippie'), with no real new information beyond the initial description. for those who are more science-minded there are lots of explanations and detailed footnotes. for those who are not (me for sure) it was an interesting read but quite enough to make it a page-turner.

Some of the chapters were very technical and a little hard to stay with. But I really liked the last few chapters on tourette's and autism. Also it has the sweetest ending. I really felt like I was also gaining a sense of Oliver sacks and how he sees the people in the world by the end. I was in his brain while he was in the brain of others.
Dated, but still fascinating. Great examples of where deficit-based thinking and approaches don’t suffice.

Deep intellectual curiosity + empathy at finest display here even compared to his other works I think
More fascinating case histories from the neurologist Sacks.
