A classic but I just didn’t get the passion :| the prose was descriptive but felt misogynistic in its portrayal of women, men, and marriage

i feel like surface level it was not bad at all but it was just such a drag to read emily brontë should have tried writing like a normal person. also every single character was constantly either abhorring someone or mortally ill, sometimes both. i get it was old timey england but wow no one could make it to forty but nelly dean huh? nelly is so me though like telling someone’s entire history basically unprompted. happy im done and now i guess i can be pretentious and tell other people i’ve read it.

This was my first Brontë book, and wow, this was a slog. I'm glad I listened to the audio, as Joanne Frogatt does a wonderful job, and I don't think I could have persevered if I was reading myself. These characters are so dismal, every one of them dislikable (except perhaps Ellen, the narrator, although she too often makes dubious decisions and does little to interfere in the abuse all around her (I know she is hired help and not in much of a position to do so, but still)). I read this just after reading Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and every character made disagreeable Mr. Darcy seem like a the most amiable, gracious, and romantic man in the world.

I tried over half a dozen times to read this book and never made it past page 30. This time the first portion of the book captured my attention, so I kept reading. By the end, the book seemed to drag with an anticlimactic finish. Well-written, but not a classic I will likely revisit.

Wasn’t the right time to grapple with 19th century language.
