Absolutely hate that she was 16 and he was like 500 years old. I had to pretend she turned 18 instead just to take out the creep factor of their relationship. You know, the grooming. It made the rest of the book tolerable. Was it good? No but it was entertaining. Not only that, but the only black character in the book, Temper, is so cringe. Like stereotypical black woman cringe.

In the 24 hours since I finished this book, I went from thinking it was an OK romance that was marred by some issues, to being really upset with myself that I continued to read it even after identifying those issues early on in the story.

Divided into two timelines (one present day, and one when the main character is 16), we see Callie go through immense trauma, be rescued and then abandoned by her rescuer, and then be reunited with him 7 years later.  The present-day parts are fine – even enjoyable at times. But every chapter we are forced to retreat to the past and watch an immortal king be lauded as “a great guy” because he somehow musters the self-control to not fuck a 16 year old?

The bar for men in romance is so low already, I can’t fathom why the author felt the need to BURY THE BAR IN A PIT by having the primary redeeming quality for the male love interest be that “oh, he could have had sex with this teen, but he didn’t and instead he just obsessed over her for 7 years, let’s all applaud this pinnacle of righteous manhood.”

There are so many other great, innovative, genuinely sexy romances out there. Go read one that doesn’t play fast and loose with consent.

Read If: You thought that the Jacob/Reneesme travesty in Twilight was “romantic.”

I mean… it’s like fine. It didn’t give everything I wanted but like. It’s okay. At times, kinda felt like fan ficcy. The romantic interest was a bit controlling for my taste. Also didn’t love the fact he was
borderline grooming her as a high schooler
low key gave me the ick.

I was excited for this book because the premise was interesting. I did not care for the casual grooming of a minor (although the reader is constantly reminded that the legal age for magical creatures is ~different~... it's still creepy AF.). I think this plot could have worked better even if Callie hadn't been so young when she met The Bargainer.

Was Callie as thick as a brick wall at times? Yes. The main guy was hot and broody though so that balances it out.

The plot was close to being nicely rounded out but it fell flat. Will read the sequel
