I had high hopes for this book but it fell flat for me. The audiobook narrator had such an angsty voice - it felt like the story was one big deal after another, which really made 8.5 hours drag. Maybe it’s because I already have tween angst in my house that it especially drove me bonkers? Perhaps reading the book would’ve been a better experience than listening.

I enjoyed this book, but while I rush to give Ursu’s other books to kids, this one felt more like an adult book in disguise for me. It’s a very allegorical, fairytale rendering of the #metoo movement, depicting how our current generation of girls are already banding together against the patriarchy while we Olds are still telling them it’s okay for girls to like blue and boys to like pink. The narrator in particular drove this one home for me as an adult book, and I’m not sure how much a kid would really grok the themes of the text, though they can definitely enjoy the surface level fantasy story.

Beautiful story of the magic of girls who come together to support each other. Identical twins, Iris and Lark, are entering the 5th grade having been placed in separate classrooms for the first time. They must then learn to stand on their own and navigate separate worlds.

I thought this book was really good, but the ending took it to the next level for me! Without revealing any details, I’ll just say that this book is full of girl power and how girls are even more powerful when they lift each other up instead of tearing each other down. This book has a strong message about identity, particularly related to young girls on the cusp of being teenagers. I loved this book and would highly recommend it to anyone, but particularly girls or parents of young girls.
