Great writing; depressing as hell. I finished The Cemetery of Untold Stories but Julia Alvarez and it really had me stressed. The writing was great and the author was wonderful at telling a really layered story (literally—there are characters alive and dead with overlapping and independent narratives woven together to meet and part and meet again at the end), but most of these characters’ stories are about women get absolutely f*cked OVER by men. Or about a man betraying a woman he loves because he’s lonely and he doesn’t know how to communicate with any of the women in his home 🙄. I liked the beginning the best where we were following the main main charter as she spoke about her friendship and the arc of her career and her unhinged idea to start life in another country and create a cemetery for all the stories she could never fully write. The other stories was blow after blow of men making life absolute hell. The propaganda I’m not falling for is that “traditional” values protect the interests of women or make families healthier. To be fair, that is not the message this book was pushing, but it really helped me double down on my conviction to always question the narrative of “crazy women” or “traditional wives.” Bleh!! The author definitely showed instances of how women—especially poor or otherwise vulnerable women—are so readily taken advantage of with little regard for their well being.
Overall, this story went in different directions than expected and was well written. I don’t know if I can say I enjoyed it, because every relationship was truly giving me the heebie jeebies, but I was compelled by how the characters were brought together.

This was a slow start but it ended very nicely.
