- 1 Star: Story(?)
-1 Star: Narrative structure
Alvarez writes beautifully and her characterization are lush. Traces of her magical realism bring Marquez to mind. But for me the concept of the novel and it's execution feel lukewarm. The entire graveyard of literary fodder is Alvarez's gateway to examine relationships on the bridge between fiction and reality. But sometimes I found it difficult to discern which of the names were entirely fictional. Maybe that was the point, but the premise felt fascinating but it dissolves into characterization that doesn't really form a story. Maybe I'm failing as a reader here, but I feel like I enjoyed the craftsman ship, but never felt thoroughly engaged.
