I was a little worried reading some of the reviews that this book was going to be some dry, depressing, rhetorical exercise. It definitely isn’t. What a fascinating exploration of a difficult topic, beautifully written and fairly complex. Captured the experience of both agonizing for a child and desperately not wanting one — sometimes at the same time — in a way I’ve rarely seen. Read the whole thing in three days. Highly recommend.

Interwoven storylines of several women living in a near future with severely restricted reproductive rights.

I picked this daily deal up hoping it would be like the handmaids tale and it’s not. While IVF and abortion are “outlawed” (and eventually so is single parenting) this is not what the story is about. It’s a fact but strangle not present. The story revolves around a woman who is trying to get pregnant but can’t and a teen who gets pregnant but doesn’t want to be, and a doctor trying to help them both. I made it sound more interesting than it was...

An interesting book about women, desire, unhappiness, pregnancy and all the struggles that surround it. Very different from most books I’ve read lately, and very honest.

The prose style really propelled this along, for me. The character work was good, though all their arcs and the plot pretty much never moved away from where I expected things to go, otherwise the book would probably warrant a higher rating from me. The central tension being tension-free, yet it never being in danger of me putting it down, feels like an accomplishment, to me. World building was also believable, especially, painfully, annunciated with roe being repealed. I don’t doubt Canada would roll over like that too. Cooperating with a fascist US, sending back, at the border, anyone attempting to get in for an abortion.
