I’ve loved her poetry for years! This anthology has a few poems that I used to use in the classroom and so many others that I hadn’t read before. This book is geared towards Middle Grade readers, but it’s truly for any age!

”The library shelves opened their arms. In the library everyone was rich. I stacked my bounty, counting books, arranging their spines. Bindings of new books smelled delicious.”

These sentences are from Nye’s introduction to this collection. If I started quoting her poems here, I would run out of room before I ran out of favorites. Nye touches my heart with almost all her poems. I am so happy that this collection has poems that I have known awhile like “Kindness” and poems that are new to me.

I was so excited to hear that she was chosen to be the Young People’s Poet Laureate. She is the perfect choice - for some of her poems are easily understood, even if you think you don’t like poetry. Children may catch the poetry bug from her.

Because I am not a poet, actually not a writer of any kind, I don’t have the words to say how important Nye has been to my life. She puts words to feelings, hopes, desires. I am grateful to her for how she has enriched my life.

Everyone should read her verse. It is a gift to us all.

I will start by saying that I have never heard such a profound take on an onion. And most of Nye's poems in this collection are very much the same - finding beauty and meaning in the mundane. I found myself brought to tears on multiple occasions, from happiness and sadness both. Everything Comes Next is undeniably powerful in its simplicity and gentleness. Nye does not rage; she does not need to. She states her truth, asks her questions, and allows them to speak for themselves. Striking. Hopeful. Necessary.

This collection brings together some of the poems & stories that helped make Naomi Shihab Nye a household name in poetry/literary circles—“Kindness” and “Gate A-4” for example—along with some of her lesser known work & a few new poems.

Suffice it to say, if you owned only one of her poetry collections, this would be a good start.

For fans of poets like Mary Oliver, John O’Donohue, & David Whyte.

Might have been my fault — I think I should have had a copy of the poems in front of me to pair with the audio
