I loved the way the time and place shifted, like the faint memories of a dying man visiting him just before his departure. War is unquestionably cruel :/ so it goes.

A really really weird book. There were aspects of the story that I wanted to learn more about, but we were constantly being bounced back and forth and it seems like only skimmed the surface of multiple stories. Read for a book club but otherwise would have not finished.

I first read this book 25 years ago (college) and thought it was amazing--poignant, timely, thought-provoking and thoughtful. Revisiting it was a disappointment. I found the story to be disjointed and odd, lacking clarity and purpose. Ethan Hawke was a dull narrator, and didn’t help bring Vonnegut’s book to life. I wish I had left things with what I remember, rather than revisiting it and shattering the memory.

I tried to give this 5.75 but Storygraph wouldn't let me. This is a perfect book.

For personal reasons, I really wanted to love this book but I just couldn’t connect. I’ll have to give it some time and reread it to try and gain some new perspective but this go around I just couldn’t engage with the plot and struggled to create a vivid image in my mind while I was reading. I think I’m just missing something here so I’ll have to revisit down the road.

3.5 stars. I think I would have enjoyed this book more had I read it in an academic setting. Some classics I absolutely love without needing deep analysis or group discussion (Frankenstein, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Pride and Prejudice, The Glass Castle to name a few); Slaughterhouse-five is not one of those classics for me. I found the writing ok and I understand what it has to say, but it did not have that special something that makes me love a classic outside of an academic setting. Vonnegut’s voice and story telling just weren’t enough to grab my full attention.
