Let’s write a future more joyful & less inevitable in segments of leaves.
Anything we dream will be better than this.

I've never left a book so dog-eared. I will be revisiting this masterpiece often.

This was absolutely bursting to the seams with emotions, all at once angry and melancholy and sorrowful and joyful, truly KB Brookins has embodied it all. Their pieces were full of STARK reflections on their life as a Black queer trans man growing up in Texas, I truly felt every fiber of their being oozing from every word. Not every poem hit for me but my favs were all the T-shot series as well as America (remixed)!

Using varying forms of poetry, KB tells us just what is on their mind, and it is a scathing review of the failings of cis/hetero white capitalist and colonized America. These poems give meaning and emotion to the individual and community plights that reject these structures daily.

Nothing has ever made me (a straight male with many lgbtqia+ friends, transitioning, & nonbinary identifying friends) understand and empathize with the daily and systemic struggles that transgenders face. At least in a way that is this accessible and creative. If you want to get out of your societal norm bubble of fragile masculinity like me then read this, and get educated and entertained at the same time. If you are transitioning or have transitioned yourself then read this to experience some positive representation. Throw in the intersectionality of being Black in Texas…this was such a powerful social justice read.
