It’s sad. It’s Irish AF. It’s not quite trauma-porn, but it’s character-driven and reflective. So therefore I enjoyed it!!

This is a beautifully written book, so artfully done that the brilliance of its language isn't intrusive. Every character is layered and developed, all of them are very different from each other, and yet their relationships to each other are clear and believable.

The story is told in a creative way, first the children of the family get effectively a short story each set at a different time, and then they and their mother come together for the last section.

A great book about family, the Irish countryside, history, family history, memory, love and kind of all round life in general. Very well done.

Four and a half stars really. Loses that half just for the ending which isn't quite as tight as the rest of the novel.
