This book was an absolute clusterfuck but GAWDDAMN I am here for it.
The plot was everywhere. I felt like a new plot dynamic was introduced every other chapter and none of them were executed well due to the brevity of the story. The dark themes didn’t bother me personally, but the chemistry, banter, and overall romance between the two main characters felt weird and stifled the entire book. Perhaps it was that way by design but it felt like the author was trying too hard to force a true villain into an enemies to lovers/forbidden romance dynamic. The FMC was confusing because she had been restricted her magic and was “innocent”, but she knew more than any other student and was confident/capable at certain times?
The side characters all also felt like unnecessary distractions. None of them were developed and I don’t see the purpose any of them had for driving the actual story.
That being said— I could NOT put this down and wanted to keep reading. The story was enthralling, shocking, kept me guessing, and left me with an absolute necessity to read the sequel immediately to continue following the story. I finished the book feeling huge ranges of deep emotion, and the fact that I’m so entwined with the story speaks to something the author did right. I don’t know exactly WHAT that is, but the magic of it obviously worked on me.

The beginning of the book seemed promising but I feel like there wasn’t a real plot. This book is mostly spice. This is your typical enemies to lovers.
