while definitely better than the previous book (Industrial Magic), still suffers a bit from too much jumping around. Really great climax! Eve and Kristof's love story is less interesting/compelling than the other relationships so far but still enjoyed it!

Another epic addition to the Women of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong. I really do mean epic as every book in this series seems to have far reaching effects that stem from the actions of one central character. Having some idea of where this series is headed and who the ultimate central figure will be, it makes for a great read seeing how everything comes together throughout the course of the books.

While Eve Levine is hardly my favorite woman of this series so far, she spent a lot of her time with some other very cool, well fleshed out characters that I would have loved to hang out with. I also love that these books don’t limit themselves to characters who are in their prime. It adds a great element of realism to a series that is otherwise characterized by witches and the afterlife.

The afterlife is where we spent most of our time in Haunted and there is no question that Kelley Armstrong spent a great deal of time fleshing out the rules of the world she created, adding various layers and nuances before throwing her characters into the mix. The various afterlife possibilities suit the secretly magical world that had already been established for the living.

That being said, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about the addition of angels and references to a creator but it was all handled well enough. I like to have some hard and fast rules with any magical series and this left a little too much up to the imagination, but when tackling these kinds of issues I’m really not sure what else you can do.

The plot itself was a whirlwind and a lot of fun. Despite the gradual changes to the arc of the series we also got to watch Eve attempt to capture a supernatural, body-jumping, demonic serial killer.

Overall, definitely a good book and this is still one of my favorite urban fantasy series but I just can’t realte to Eve the same way as I have the other women of the Otherworld. She’s still completely kick-ass though, no question. I will absolutely be continuing with the series, as what initially promoted me to get to reading them again is that I found the next three at a garage sale a couple months ago now. Score!

I loved this book. I love Eve and was so glad we got to see Savannah again. I hate Nix and how she is able to inhabit bodies and uses the worst people and allows them to do want they want. I hate how Nix goes after Savannah and I love how Eve immediately goes to save her. I was glad we got to see Paige again and I love how she is so willing to defend Savannah.I was glad when they finally defeated Nix and how everything worked out in the end. 5 stars!!

It's taken me a long while to get to this book in the series. I had a bit of bias about Eve from reading the other books. That was wrong of me I know, but there it is. All I read was about how evil she was and the only good thing she did was be the mother of Savannah, ward of Jaime.
The book showed up as BOCD in the mail and it seemed a very good time to listen to it. Especially after listening to the novella a while back that featured Eve and Christoph. Both of an evil propensity, but decent-ish.
I am glad I got over my prejudices and listened to the story. It's a good one.
I love how Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld are so varied in nature and preter-nature. Accept them as they are, they don't mind.
Eve is really only perceived as evil. She just wants to be more than what she is supposed to be, more than toeing the line of being a witch. Others judged her for it.
I liked this book a lot. I hope I see more of Eve.
Definitely recommend.

3.5 stars. I read 1-4 two years ago and had really forgotten what was going on. A quick trip to wiki refreshed me, but I wish I could go back and reread the others and see how people perceived Eve, because I don't quite remember. Pretty much same impression as the others - easy, entertaining books that I get through quickly. Looking forward to the next one.

Eve and Kristof are probably my favorite characters, but this book gets a little sluggish in the middle.

"Eve Levine — half-demon, black witch and devoted mother — has been dead for three years. She has a great house, an interesting love life and can’t be killed again — which comes in handy when you’ve made as many enemies as Eve. Yes, the afterlife isn’t too bad — all she needs to do is find a way to communicate with her daughter, Savannah, and she’ll be happy.

But fate — or more exactly, the Fates — have other plans. Eve owes them a favor, and they’ve just called it in. An evil spirit called the Nix has escaped from hell. She feeds on chaos and death, and is very good at persuading people to kill for her. The Fates want Eve to hunt her down before she does any more damage, but the Nix is a dangerous enemy — previous hunters have been driven insane in the process. As if that’s not problem enough, the only way to stop her is with an angel’s sword. And Eve is no angel. . . ." (From Amazon)

I like this novel as it was interesting to see Eve not just being evil or portrayed that way. She finds redemption especially through her daughter, Savannah.

Haunted

As a half-demon / half-witch, Eve Levine lived her life in the fast lane with little care for the consequences of her actions. Now that she is dead, not much has changed. When the Fates call in a favor, Eve agrees to hunt down and capture an evil spirit wrecking havoc on the living world, but things aren’t as easy as they seem and Eve will have to call on all her resources if she is to outwit the tricky Nix…

Good world building as always and an entertaining plot, but Eve is not a likable heroine and her romance with Kristoff is lukewarm.

The mystery in this installment is one of the more gripping in the series. The Nix is a formidable foe and the inclusion of details concerning historical crimes adds extra nuance to the story. Another positive element is the updates on secondary characters. Paige, Lucas & Savannah are becoming a family and Jaime’s painful crush on Jeremy is so cute.

The most significant problem with the book is the need for readers to suspend their disbelief and accept that Eve and Kristoff, who have been ethically challenged to say the least, are now a heroic duo fighting against evil. While Kristoff does manage to redeem himself to a certain extent after sacrificing himself to save his daughter, the same cannot be said of Eve and it is difficult to care one way or the other about what happens to her.

Laural Merlington’s narration is never going to rank amongst my favorites, but I’ve learned to live with it.

All in all, not my favorite book in the series but worth the read.
