Loved the whole idea of there being a society in the afterlife, with jobs and everything. I like Eve a lot better now after reading this book but I'm ready to see the next stage of Elena and Clay's life <3

Book 5 in the Women of the Otherworld series. This is the story of Eve, Savannah's mother, and Kris, her former lover, and Savannah's father. Eve was a powerful witch, which dabbled in black magic, and Kris was a powerful sorcerer, and Lucas' half brother. They both died, and are ghosts now. Eve is employed by the three fates to capture a demonic Nix. If she manages to do that, she will get her wings. According to the Toronto Star, “Armstrong has created a persuasive, finely detailed other-worldly cosmology — featuring sorcery, astral projection, spells, telepathy and teleportation.” Very different than her other two story lines, but like her other books, this one did not disappoint.

I really enjoyed this book a whole lot more than I expected to. Still not quite as much as the Elena *cough*CLAY*cough* books, but a whole lot.

Eve was such an unlikely heroine, and it was very fun to read!

I wanted to read this book because I love fantasy. However, I’ve only ever read young adult fantasy and wanted something with more adults rather than teenagers. I have watched the tv show and have always wanted to read this series. During lockdown, I re-watched the tv show and forgot how much I loved it. I decided to read this series and I was not disappointed with the first couple of books and wanted to know what happens next.

This book follows Eve Levine who we’ve met a few times except she is dead and in the afterlife isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. She has broken all the rules, but she has never broken a promise, not even during the three years she’s spent in the afterworld. So when the fates call in a debt she gave her word to pay, she has no choice but to comply. For centuries one of the ghost world’s wickedest creatures has been loosed on humanity, thwarting every attempt to retrieve her. Now it has fallen to Eve to capture this demi-demon known as the Nix, who inhabits the bodies of would-be killers, compelling them to complete their deadly acts. It's a mission that becomes too personal when the Nix targets those Eve loves most – including Savannah.

Just like the last book, this book really disappointed me, I just found it really, really difficult to get into and considering I know the characters and have learned to love the characters, I just don’t know what it was. I think it was the introduction of more supernatural beings that weren’t wanted or needed in this book or series – the Nix, the pirates and the Angels. It didn’t feel like the romance and fantasy I was used to it – there was a lot of politics of the fates and the angels. I liked the storyline of the Eve trying to redeem herself for her actions, but there were too many explanations of things that haven’t been mentioned previously.

I really like this series and I’m gutted this book disappointed me and that I didn’t like it as much as the others. The characters are great. I really wanted to see more of the Pack from the first book, but I see why Eva was the main storyline of this novel due to the events of the last novel. I loved the banter between Paige and Lucas, and how the relationship has grown, I can’t believe they are married! I missed Elena and Clay and was annoyed they weren’t in it at all. I liked that we got to see more of Jaime and still rooting for her and Jeremy. I still preferred the first book, but it wasn’t a bad book, and I cannot wait for the next book in the series. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy books.

TW/CW: Death, murder, torture, sex, violence, fantasy violence

REVIEW: This is the fifth book of my Kelley Armstrong’s Otherworld re-read. Haunted is the story of Eve Levine, the deceased mother of Savannah Levine. In this story, Eve, a ghost living in the realm of the dead, is given an assignment by the fates to catch an evil demonic spirit. With the help of an angel and the also deceased Kristoff Nast she sets off on a search throughout many different realms, meeting many interesting and terrifying characters along the way.
Eve is not my favorite of the Otherworld women, but this story was still interesting and engaging. Some of the images were really disturbing and graphic, but not so much that it entirely scared me away. It was also interesting to get to see a bit of the mythology of Armstrong’s afterlife, which we’d only seen in small snippets to this point in scenes with Jaime, the necromancer.
This book was a little bit on the long side, but it went pretty quickly. I recommend to fans of Kelley Armstrong, and to fans of urban fantasy and strong women.

Since I really enjoyed [b:Industrial Magic|125925|Industrial Magic (Women of the Otherworld, #4)|Kelley Armstrong|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1171907387s/125925.jpg|121282] I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the switch to Eve's story. Not having read #1 or #2 as yet i only had the barest back story on her role in previous books so I wasn't too sure what to expect.
Most suprisingly Haunted is set 2 years later than Industrial Magic. I expected a much shorter time gap or even overlap.
I did find that Haunted was another highly enjoyable, {mostly} fast paced installment exploring a new world, myths and new characters.
Eve is struggling to find a place in the ghost realm, wanting to find a way to return to her daughters life in some way, and accepts a task by the Fates to help capture an escaped demi demon hoping that she will find a way to reach out to Savannah. The demi demon known as Nix, who has instigated serial killer sprees, is not easy to find or capture and the investigation is challenging. Eve recieves support from Kristoff with whom she is redefining her relationship. And the assistance of an angel Trsiel - I actually spent the entire book expecting him to turn out to be evil since his incompetence seemed far too contrived. This was the major complaint I would have - because it seems he just really was just that stupid when he wasn't a stupid character and so i have a hard time reconciling those inconsistancies.
I really liked Armstrongs exploration of the nature of and degrees evil and I found Eve's POV of her own actions interesting given the impressions/thoughts others had of her in the mortal world.
I would prefer 3 and a half stars on this book. It wasn't quite as good as Industrial Magic - it dragged a bit more with the near misses and Trseil's character was annoying. However another entertaining installment, started [b:Broken|11915|Broken (Women of the Otherworld, #6)|Kelley Armstrong|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1166490273s/11915.jpg|895274] as soon as I finished
