Woof this hurt. It was tense in all the best ways and had me on edge more than I was expecting. It never felt gimmicky or like there was a formula it was following. The romance aspect almost felt secondary to me which wasn't what I picked up the book for. I wanted the romance and while it was there it was definitely more tension, suspense.
I found this book by accident because of a suggestion for it popped on facebook of all places. And I am so happy that it did!
I love a story about a heroine in hiding and an protective hero and this story was all of that and had a perfect pace and was beautifully written.
Evelyn is on the run and ends up on a ranch in Montana. She meets Lucas who is the owner of the ranch. This ranch is called Resting Warrior Ranch. It was started for people who need help or a place to get away. Lucas senses that Evelyn is running from something and offers her a place to stay as well as helping her get a job.
Lucas starts to develop an urge to protect and help Evelyn. He never pushes her for her story but once they get closer he starts to develop deeper feelings for her and Evelyn does for him as well. When danger gets closer to home Lucas will do everything in his power to protect Evelyn.
This book had the perfect amount of romance and suspense. I loved the way Lucas treated Evelyn and never once pushed her for anything and left everything to her at her pace. I can't wait to read more from this series.

MONTANA SANCTUARY started out really good and I liked Evelyn's inner strength in the face of everything she suffered at the hands of her abusive ex. She's been on the run for years but she doesn't let that completely dim her light. Lucas was a good love interest for Evelyn because he understood how draining living with trauma could be and he also respected her boundaries. He becomes a safe place for Evelyn to come to peace with her past and her scars and to find love again.
The story was going strong for me but then it became too much and it was crazy that a bunch of highly trained ex-SEALs were being bested by a random trust fund guy. And they made a huge deal about how he was untraceable and that he must have some kind of government protection so I'm supposed to believe that he's going to have justice served and stay in jail? It just didn't make sense.
Content Warning: recounting of past abusive partner; on page PTSD and panic attack; wartime trauma

I binged the audiobook in one sitting. "Approach her slowly and quietly" is my new favorite trope.

I’m not a contemporary romance girly. It’s mainly because it uses a lot of the same tropes over and over again and without adding something to the mix (solid writing and characters being a huge plot point) the book just feels flat. That was this book.
We start out with Evelyn on the run from an abusive stalker ex boyfriend. She ends up applying for a job on a ranch owned by ex navy seals. And there she meets Lucas, who immediately knows she’s a battered woman and wants to save her. Because there is was that one time that he didn’t save someone. And like she’s the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen and she doesn’t know it.
The tropes are so overused. Ex navy seals somehow can afford to run a ranch where they train horses as service animals and can provide lodging for people who need it. How do they afford this? It is not mentioned, it just is. Lucas is a cookie cutter ex navy seal with a hero complex. He has zero backstory besides being a navy seal making him essentially a cardboard cutout dressed as a man. He also fails to save Evelyn (because she does the thing EVERY WOMAN IN THESE BOOKS DOES, and gets herself captured by her ex) even though he promised to protect her. She also somehow manages to survive by working minimum wage jobs and just jumping from place to place. which is probably the most unbelievable part of this story.
It’s just not a great book overall. I did finish it because I kept hoping it would get better and it didn’t. The plot was flat, the characters were flat, and overall I won’t read anything by the authors again.
