A slow burn, but the pieces coming together makes for a good thrill in the end.
Audio. This kept me interested as the story and background unfolded. Good character and plot development. Just when the reader is ready to jump in the boat against the victim, the author shows the reader that it's not quite what it seems. Characters are not all good or all bad; everyone has suffered. The ending goes down pleasingly well.
3.5 Stars— Nina forays into grifting through the influence of her shifty mother and sidekick boyfriend. Brown brings the reader along on her escapades and immediately shapes a clever, intriguing story. However, it loses steam about half-way through when she focuses more on Vanessa’s character, whose insecurities are overplayed and connection with Nina feels forced. Unfortunately, Brown’s twists didn’t do much to rekindle my initial excitement for the story.

I enjoyed the writing style and the background we get on all of the characters. There’s depth here and that’s why the last quarter of the book is shocking.
The commentary on social media, class politics, and family dynamics was very interesting. The topic of schizophrenia was handled well.l which is hard to find in books.

This was a 3.5 for me but I rounded up because it deserved more than a three. The cover is what drew me in initially. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t really all that unique either. I still enjoyed it overall. A fast pace read that leaves you hanging on certain parts.
