I was hooked immediately by this book. I read the middle on the day of an attempted coup so it seemed a bit more sluggish than the rest, but really picks up steam at the end and I’m very glad I read it. Suspenseful thriller that wasn’t scary or creepy, with sharp and often funny writing by Janelle Brown.
This book wasn’t what I expected. Holy hell it was sensational and thrilling.
The story is told from two points of view, Nina and Vanessa’s. They live completely different lives until they end up crossing paths and their lives are never the same. Secrets, lies and revenge fuel this story and will have you on the edge of your seat! The author’s writing is excellent. I was thoroughly engaged from beginning to end. Although the characters were all great in their own way, I think my favorite character is Nina. Her backstory resonated with me. I finished this book awhile ago but I needed time to process. This book blew me away! This is the first book by this author and it won’t be the last. I was pleasantly surprised and I highly recommend this book! I give this 5 stars.

I have to admit that the book was not on my radar at all for this year. This wasn't for any particular reason, I just hadn't had a reason to pay attention. Fast forward a couple of months and suddenly "Pretty Things" is everywhere!
This was my first venture into the world of Janelle Brown's writing, but now I think I may have to check out her other stuff. "Pretty Things" is told from multiple point of views. There is a long set up and a lot of detail and misdirection used. You are guessing every stepping of the way what is going to happen next.
"Pretty Things" has all the makings of a great psychological thriller—unreliable narrators, deception and con-artistry, and all the juicy drama that follows flawed human interactions. Janelle Brown doesn't disappoint!

The base plot was predictable, but I think that was the point. Where the plot went was a bit unexpected - which was fun at first, but quickly felt never-ending - until it finally closed with an unsatisfactory flop. Bit of a bummer for the interesting premise with promising motifs.
