I really enjoyed "Pretty Things" by Janelle Brown. I read it as a recommendation from a friend and at first I really thought I was going to slog through it. As it turned out, the familiar setting on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe (and Southern California) had me quickly drawn in. This book is part mystery, part commentary on the money and life circumstances we are all born into, and an interesting perspective on social media in the age of influencers. I couldn't put it down and stayed up way too late trying to finish it!
Damnit.... I started out liking it, then was bored with how predictable I thought it was and then it surprised me and I am a little annoyed by that lol
From the publisher: This dazzling, twisty, mesmerizing novel showcases acclaimed author Janelle Brown at her best, as two brilliant, damaged women try to survive the greatest game of deceit and destruction they will ever play.
I found the above synopsis perfectly described Janelle Brown's Pretty Things. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and all of the twists and turns it created with the two perspectives. Brown used unreliable narrators extremely well, and I found it hard to dislike either one of them despite their very obvious flaws. This book kept me on my toes up until the end and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys thrillers that have more depth than the usual quick read has.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for this great ARC!

Nina was raised by a grifter and con artist and has become one herself. Vanessa is off old money and seemingly has everything in life she could ever want. When their paths cross the reader is taken on a wild ride with many twists and turns. Who is playing who? Will old love come back to ruin you and how does one get ahead in life when it appears like they are set up to always be one step behind and failing.
From the very first page, this book grabbed and kept me hooked until the end. The way the characters are connected, whether they know it or not, and the way you get to know each character is great. Who is conning who and what will come next? At one point I thought I knew exactly what was going on and then the book took a sharp left turn that caught me off guard and had me asking, what? Wait, how did that happen? I really enjoyed this book and I could not put it down until I was finished.

This was a fast but entertaining ride. I found the characters to be well-developed enough to be interesting, and I honestly wasn't expecting that. I thought this would be more fluffy than it was. But I really enjoyed how twisty it was. I gasped out loud at a few points. I love that this might be made into a movie - I can definitely see that, except, that now I know how it will turn out!
Pretty Things is a literary suspense told from two POVs - Vanessa, a lonely rich heiress who makes her money as an Instagram influencer, and Nina, the daughter of a con-artist who can’t seem to escape her mother’s grifting ways. With a full cast of complex characters and twists you’ll never see coming, there is no way of knowing who is actually scamming who until the very end.
A very interesting book full of twists and turns. The characters are all very complex and while it's hard to really love any of them, their flaws make sense. The story is told from both POVs - that of the grifter and the heiress (per the jacket description), and at first I wasn't interested in the heiress's side, but once I understood her better, it was easier to appreciate her actions. Despite its few-too-many twists and implausibilities, it was fun to read.
What an AMAZING book!!! A nonstop thrill ride with plenty of twists and turns. Thoroughly enjoyed this one!!!
