The plot seemed great in the beginning, but something was lacking, the characters felt a bit simple in some way and the ending of the book was a bit too much of everything
Mixed feelings, but don’t quite know what else I was expecting

I loved the setting of this novel—an old mansion on lake Tahoe. Involved Rich people, romance, crime, lying, and had unexpected turns, I could not put this down.
3.5 ⭐️. I enjoyed listening. Thanks to Lea for the review that recommended this to me.
I was intrigued and felt like I had to finish it when I was about halfway through.
I liked the multiple point of views, especially the views of the same scene, that was a good touch.
I honestly skimmed sometimes when they were thinking too much or there was too much in their head dialogue.
I thought it was really long.
Good not great

meh. i wasn’t on fire about this one. the story was somewhat interesting but after engaging in stories like dirty rotten scoundrels and catch me if you can, i didn’t feel like it brought anything remarkably new to the topic.
the characters could have been interesting but felt shallow to me. the thing that bothered me the most was how vanessa would keep telling us that she was surprisingly self aware, when she is far from it. she had a flawed view of self awareness because of her entrenchment in social media but the author didn’t seem to realize that about her own character
the plot twists were a little interesting, but only in the final one hundred pages of the book. otherwise, i think this could have been a really interesting character exploration if it had been done much better
this book club i’m in is opening my eyes to so many different genres i’d never explored and it’s made me realize that what i started with, classics and literary fiction, are actually my favorite genres

I really flew through the first part of this book with the con setup and character introductions for Nina and her boyfriend, Lachlan. The backstory for the heiress/social media influencer, Vanessa, was kind of bland for me, and I typically do not find characters such as hers likable. The story could have benefited with Vanessa’s back story trimmed down. When the main characters wind up together at Stonehaven, their stories are intertwined more than they think. The second half of the book is quite exciting with its twists and turns. Overall, I enjoyed the book and the layers of con artistry.
November 2021: I read this a year & a half ago and still find myself thinking about the characters in this book. I'm all about character development, and I can still picture the awkward, teenage Nina; her mother's hair and nails, from their youthful effervescence to the ailing woman she's become.
I forgot how much I didn't like the ending until I came back and read a few other reviews. It was disappointing at the time, but I don't mind at all in retrospect. I give this a solid 4 stars for the overall enjoyment of the story.
August 28, 2024: A second reading of this book reminded me how lush and beautiful this twisting and turning mystery really is. I gasped aloud multiple times, surprised again by the moments my memory had wiped away. Still. So. Good. Is this my favorite book? I’ve never been able to answer that question, but maybe I have an answer now. Five stars. Would read again. And again.
