This was a fun read. The first half is a deep dive into backstory and character psyche. I didn’t find this part difficult to get through, despite the fact there isn’t much forward motion. I found some parts of the characters (even the rather narcissistic old money social media influencer) relatable and others completely foreign, which was just as enjoyable, peeking through the curtain. It also acts like a lift hill on a roller coaster; you drop into the twists and turns of the second half and all the pieces rapidly fall into place. Some are fun but unsurprising, while others come out of nowhere. It was hard to put the book down for the last few chapters.
Sometimes the commentary on social media, the college to workforce path, and the financial disparity between the two narrators is a little heavy handed and transparent, which pulled me out of the story a couple of times, but overall didn’t detract too much from the story.
If you’re looking for a slow burn psychological suspense heavy on vengeance and just a hint of romance, you might like this one.

Oh very good, satisfying ending. I love when the girls win. Read more by this author.
4.5 stars. "Pretty Things" is an absolute gem of a novel. With its intricate plot, rich character development, and unexpected twists, it kept me hooked from beginning to end. The author expertly covers themes of identity, deception, and the complexities of human relationships, making this a captivating read that I couldn't put down.
This was a fast but entertaining ride. I found the characters to be well-developed enough to be interesting, and I honestly wasn't expecting that. I thought this would be more fluffy than it was. But I really enjoyed how twisty it was. I gasped out loud at a few points. I love that this might be made into a movie - I can definitely see that, except, that now I know how it will turn out!
The beginning of the book really grabbed me, but by about 1/3 of the way in I kind of figured out the ending. I loved the alternating points of view, but took off stars because there was a lot of overlap and repetition from different perspectives.
Libby audiobook. Excellent. What a ride. Julia Whelan did half the audio. Two, first person POV with back and forth timelines.
I listened to this after it was recommended on Read or Dead as having really good readers. It was compelling and well-plotted. I saw a couple of the twists coming, but not all. I didn't love the ending in the epilogue.
Loved this! It had me guessing and on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book. Super fun cat and mouse thriller!
As an author, I often get asked what book I wish I'd written. I was about two pages into Pretty Things when I knew it would be my latest answer. Set on the wintry shores of Lake Tahoe, a gorgeously written and wildly clever page turner about a grifter and an heiress who band together for the scam of a lifetime.
It was hard to know who to root for, as the POV swung between the 2 main female characters, but in truth neither of them was terribly likeable. That didn’t stop me from enjoying this story, though! The commentary on living our lives online and how appearances are everything for so many was spot on. We’ve all seen a Vanessa influencer type for sure. Peeking behind the persona was interesting.
