It was an excellent read. I never thought this book would become one of my favorite reads. Chaboute is really talented, especially in showing emotions through drawing. The lonely man, his sad life, and the metaphors show this loneliness and being a prisoner. The fish and getting stuck in a lighthouse. Knowing the world by only looking at some words in a dictionary. Wanted to communicate with the outside but not so sure because of being misshapen and disabled, 2 words that societies hate. It was an impactful read and the ending was perfect. It was an emotional ride and more than just drawings of birds or the sea. I will definitely read other books by this author.

I was able to read this huge book in one sitting, and like Park Bench, the attention to detail and feeling of movement (among other things) was great! In this story we have a man named Alone, thus named by those who know of his existence, who lives in a lighthouse. Everyone just accepts the fact that he's there and never really ask more. But then that changes when a new sailor starts passing by the lighthouse and wonders, why is he there? does anyone else know? is there something special you'd like?

In a way, this gives Alone a cheery yet sad vibe. Cheery because Alone doesn't look like he feels alone. He has a pet goldfish and he learns words from a dictionary and creates worlds based on these things. And a lot of these words are goofy but then he sees words like Monster and Imprisonment and the book takes a sadder tone as he realizes he's a prisoner

I do really like the ending

a really good graphic novel. Despite having picked up a French edition the pictures are so well drawn and emotive. There is little dialogue and this makes the French version I read particularly accessible if you're working with secondary school French, like I was.

Beautiful. Lighthouse keeper who has never been anywhere else lives a life of solitude. Do we all see ourselves as monsters? Possibly. Do we all perceive the world in a wildly unique way? Definitely.

The strength of a novel without using a lot of words. So precious.

- He must be unhappy.
- Unhappy about what, Mr. Freud? ... He's never known anything but his tower and the horizon.

This book just made my emotions run the gamut. The title character, Alone, is a man that finds himself isolated in the lighthouse in which he was born long after his parents have died. The captain of the Dahlia promised his father he would drop off supplies for the man each month and he has done so for years. The captain has a newly hired deckhand that begins to question the isolated life that Alone has lived.

In the lighthouse, Alone has a dictionary as a connection to the outside world. He drops the dictionary on his desk and reads words and their definition and then gets lost in his imagination. This is the only way Alone interacts with the world. As the story progresses, we begin to learn that perhaps the connection is precarious and Alone may want more.

The illustrations are well done. Close ups and landscapes and storyboards that are all evocative of life in isolation.

I have already requested Chaboute's [b:The Park Bench|32951507|The Park Bench|Christophe Chabouté|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1499336598l/32951507._SX50_.jpg|53580167].
