I really enjoyed [b:Cross Her Heart|37486235|Cross Her Heart|Sarah Pinborough|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1522434135l/37486235._SY75_.jpg|57682706] so I was excited to read [b:Dead to Her|45730132|Dead to Her|Sarah Pinborough|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1576625975l/45730132._SY75_.jpg|71272552] by [a:Sarah Pinborough|457300|Sarah Pinborough|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1463056151p2/457300.jpg] as well. Unfortunately (why can't the book always be as good as the cover?) it didn't completely work for me.

It felt like a fast read but still took me over 5.5 hours which is pretty long for me for a 385-page book. Also, I don't really think it could be considered a thriller. Dead to Her is more like a drama-filled mystery about wealthy people and people with secrets they'd rather keep buried. The plot was a little slow for my taste and I ended up guessing the killer before it was revealed. This was disappointing since I was expecting a crazy twist that I didn't think I got.

There were definitely positives as well though. Dead to Her has a lot of layers and there always seemed to be something new to learn about the characters. I was a fan of the ending even though some people weren't, and I'm hopeful there is more karma coming to some of the characters! I also really enjoyed the setting of Savannah, Georgia and the voodoo theme.

Song/s the book brought to mind: I Put A Spell On You by Annie Lennox

Final Thought: Even though Dead to Her isn't going to be my favorite Pinborough novel, I definitely still recommend checking it out for yourself. Not a lot of likable characters but that didn't bother me, and there were still a few things I wasn't expecting. I love the experience that reading Pinborough's books gives me, and I can't wait for the next one!

Thank you to Edelweiss for my advance review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

I’m very confused as to the plot of this book, but I appreciated the ending.

Ehhhh. It was fine? Some of the lesbian stuff felt clumsy (texted a friend about the woman character, in her first lesbian relationship, already making cliche statements about women playing games). The voodoo stuff was interesting-ish, but then I googled the names mentioned... why use the exact same names/plot lines but not timeline? Not a big problem just didn’t see the point

Being the second wife is hard. Especially hard when you suspect your husband might be cheating on you with his boss' new wife. Keisha, the beautiful new wife, who quickly overshadows Marcie. Revenge is best served cold but you just never know in the Savannah heat when it might just boil over into murder.

It's hard to write too much without giving away the plot. Let's just say the ending was not what I thought it would be. It was however a great story! I have enjoyed Sarah Pinborough's work and this was no exception. I'm looking forward to reading more from her.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

First thing: I liked the twist and the ending.
However, this book was a slog to get through. I feel like Sarah needed more foreshadowing and more reveals part way through the book to keep us going. It felt like a 300 + book with a 10 page reveal. I just felt she repeated the same old stuff for the first 200 + pages and it didn’t help the book. But. I think this would make a good series like they did with Behind Her Eyes. Overall I’m just a bit disappointed, but I didn’t hate the reveal or ending like most do.

I thoroughly enjoyed Sarah Pinborough’s debut, Behind Her Eyes, and it’s a book I recommend often when someone wants to read a thriller. When I started reading Dead to Her I thought, ‘I’m really enjoying this! Screw the low ratings on Goodreads’!
And then somewhere along the way, it just completely lost me. The plot relies so heavily on the sex scenes that there was a point I had no idea what the point of the book was. There’s also this voodoo element that is so random, again, I had no idea what the point was. Basically, this book tried to be an edgy, sexy thriller, and failed miserably.⁣⁣

Being the second wife can be murder...

Marcie Maddox has worked hard to get away from her past and into the world of country clubs and large houses. Her husband, Jason left his wife for her, and now she has everything she wants...or so it seems. Jason's boss William, returns from a trip to England with a new, younger and very attractive wife, Keisha. Marcie starts thinking her husband is having an affair with Keisha, but when Keisha and Marcie start out a friendship it turns out to be something else completely. What exactly is Jason hiding from her and is Keisha involved?

Dead to Her was not exactly what I expected. Since this is a story about the overly wealthy, of course there was a lot of backstabbing and cheating, but it's not only about the affairs of the rich in Savannah, GA. A large subplot to the story was based on voodoo so if that is not your thing, than this book is probably not for you. I found that none of the characters were likeable so there wasn't really anyone I was routing for in this crazy and twisted story. Everyone was awful in their own way which isn't a bad thing, but I usually like to have one character I actually like.

There were some parts that I felt moved slowly, and I could have done without the entire voodoo subplot. I don't think it was necessary for this book at all. I also feel like the part with the "ghost" in Keisha's past was unnecessary as well. If these parts weren't included than the book definitely would have moved the plot forward faster. With that said, I do think the storyline of these horrible people made a good story, and the author did a good job of throwing in some twists and turns throughout.

Thank you NetGalley and William Morrow for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Marcie isn’t the only second wife. When her husband’s business partner comes back from Europe with a much younger wife himself, Marcie starts to wonder about her own husband’s wandering eye. He’s got form.

So when Keisha and Marcie strike up a friendship that develops into something more, she realised that it can’t go any further. She’s got too much to risk. And it wasn’t Jason Keisha was after, it’s her.

They throw a huge Fourth of July party at Keisha’s mansion, but with Keisha off her Valium and her paranoid thoughts about ‘bad Juju’ resurfacing it’s a disaster, leading to her husband wanting her taken out of his will and filing for divorce. It’s no shock the next morning that he’s has a convenient heart attack and cracks his head after his morning treadmill run.

An investigation into embezzlement and attempted murder amongst a web of lies and deceit puts them all in the frame - but who was it??

What a brilliant read! It kept me enthralled right to the end and I loved the voodoo theme running through this. I wasn’t expecting half of what happened to happen and I loved all the unexpected twists and turns. Definitely one to give a go.

I was intrigued by this at first, but then it went on and on and on. Parts 1 and 2 were way too long. Parts 3 and 4 were better, but I was pretty checked out by that point.

The type of writing that takes us into the world portrayed in the book.
A tale of greed , avarice, superstition, superiority ..
The ongoing strife between aristocratic Southerners and mere mortals .

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this one.
