This was quite the read. It will twist you around many times making it a challenge to guess the spoilers. The book is centered around the social elite in Savannah, Georgia which is one of the reasons this book drew me into it. I know this area well enough to relate to much of the descriptions and locations from personal experience. The two main couples are both deeply flawed in many ways. There are Jason and Marcie who are the good looking couple who both have messy past histories and who wed after an affair that rocked Savannah society. The other couple is William and Keisha, he is a wealthy widower who barely mourned his wife's passing before finding a new wife in the UK with stunning Keisha. There are issues with her as well of course because she is much younger than William, from a different country and also is black. This is all shocking to the Country Clubbers who don't even yet allow the wives/women to hold primary membership .
There are twists and turns throughout and there are components of magical thinking with voodoo playing a role in the theme. Overall, I enjoyed the story and plot. The characters seemed flat at times and were all unlikeable. Only a few of the supporting characters seemed to be written as decent people. The pacing also was great at the start and the end but lagged in the middle stretch.

Thank you so much to William Morrow and Harper Collins for my copy of Dead to Her.

Ok... I don’t read thrillers often but when I do I am stuck in the following loop: I think I know who ‘did it
‘ or at least part of the story; the story turns out to be different from what I thought; and by different I mean disappointing...

What I loved: ITS GAY! and every character was well-defined so for sure a +1 there.

Everything else? Meh.

Thanks to William Morrow for the free early copy in exchange for my honest review

I became a fan of Pinborough after picking up 13 MINUTES and CROSS HER HEART, so I was anxious to see how this new one would shape up. One thing I’ve noticed about a lot of her books is that they become pretty divisive among readers. People either love the twists and the plot or they just don’t connect with it. DEAD TO HER is no different. Now that I’ve finished it and read other reviews, I completely understand where both sides are coming from, but this one just worked so well for me!

There are a lot of elements in this book and some very unlikable characters. The only thing that brought down my rating was that the pacing felt a little off at times while I was trying to keep all the chaos straight. Of course the author is able to bring it all together well and it was amazing at how all these pieces worked.

All the secrets, all the drama, some voodoo elements, the rich and the poor, and so much more. Another very original story, which is something I feel like the thriller community has been craving lately. Again, this one will be very divisive like her other books, but you gotta love that for discussions! Pinborough does a great job at keeping you guessing from start to finish and I will continue to pick up her books in the future!

2, maybe 2.5 stars

Oh, Sarah, I just don't know. I mostly like how this author writes, but I keep having misses with her... *sighs* This was so predictable for so much of it that the twist at the end (I'm clearly noticing a signature pattern) was underwhelming and felt overreaching. I like her descriptions and character development enough to not want to think she's a one-hit-wonder but it's beginning to feel like it might be that way for me. This one especially felt like it was trying too hard... My heart breaks because I was pretty read to love this story.

I was expecting a hard hitting and twisty thriller like all of Pinborough's other reads unfortunately I felt this one fell a little flat and was too drawn out. I felt we learn far too much about irrelevant characters and not as much about the main characters.

I have come to the conclusion that wealthy people are evil...haha jk jk

Being the second wife can be murder...

Marcie Maddox has worked hard to get away from her past and into the world of country clubs and large houses. Her husband, Jason left his wife for her, and now she has everything she wants...or so it seems. Jason's boss William, returns from a trip to England with a new, younger and very attractive wife, Keisha. Marcie starts thinking her husband is having an affair with Keisha, but when Keisha and Marcie start out a friendship it turns out to be something else completely. What exactly is Jason hiding from her and is Keisha involved?

Dead to Her was not exactly what I expected. Since this is a story about the overly wealthy, of course there was a lot of backstabbing and cheating, but it's not only about the affairs of the rich in Savannah, GA. A large subplot to the story was based on voodoo so if that is not your thing, than this book is probably not for you. I found that none of the characters were likeable so there wasn't really anyone I was routing for in this crazy and twisted story. Everyone was awful in their own way which isn't a bad thing, but I usually like to have one character I actually like.

There were some parts that I felt moved slowly, and I could have done without the entire voodoo subplot. I don't think it was necessary for this book at all. I also feel like the part with the "ghost" in Keisha's past was unnecessary as well. If these parts weren't included than the book definitely would have moved the plot forward faster. With that said, I do think the storyline of these horrible people made a good story, and the author did a good job of throwing in some twists and turns throughout.

Thank you NetGalley and William Morrow for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I finished listening to Dead to Her a few days ago. I have put off reviewing it because I didn’t really like it.

Here’s what didn’t work for me:

•I did not care about any of the characters. At all. The whole book.
•So much jealousy. Like all characters were entirely driven by jealousy. That is a bit hyperbolic, but it’s not too far off.
•I knew who did it early on. Never thought it was anyone else. Took away a lot of the suspense for me.

So why did I finish this book?

Dead to Her is Sarah Pinborough’s follow up to her pitch-black perfection of a thriller ‘Behind Her Eyes’. I LOVED that book so much. It was moody and evil and filled with horrible, selfish people doing horrible things to each other. Dead to Her is filled with an equal amount of evil and selfish people too but it took me a long time to warm up to the story because they were all beautiful, wealthy second wives and I was just “eh, who gives a cats bum about these witches and their inner thoughts”. This is where you call me a jerk and I totally agree.

“They were all poison one way or another and maybe she was the only one honest enough to see it.”

But somewhere along the line when the lusty interludes and evil goings-on began, my attention was caught and I couldn’t wait to see the devastation hit them all hard. This is the part where some people might want to tune out but I was there for it. I’m not going to pen a detailed review, this is a lurid thriller and the fun of them should be experienced by the reader and never spoiled beforehand.

This wasn’t a perfect read for me but I enjoyed it once it hooked me and I got over my dislike of the grasping second wife trope. There is a little voodoo, a little passion, a whole helluva lot of betrayal, delectable villains, and some nicely haunting turns of phrase as well as my favorite thing: secrets!

“Even in the sunshine, it seemed ghosts fought for breath.”
