I don't know about this one. It was definitely well written (of course!) but I'm not sure I'm ready to believe THAT many coincidences. And it didn't have any of the haunting, aching beauty of Case Histories. I've got the third one in the basket, fingers crossed it's better. Or at least a touch more believable.

I loved this book. Then I got to the last line, and I loved this book so much more than before that I find it hard to talk about it. Seriously.

We pick up a year down the line from where we left off with Case Histories, with Jackson Brodie now owning a house in France and in a happy relationship with Julia. They are at the Edinburgh fringe festival for Julia's show, for what promises to be a lovely few days ..... but Jackson seems to be a magnet for trouble, and there really is such a thing as being in the wrong place at the wrong time .....

This was different to Case Histories and took me a few chapters to get into, but Atkinson never fails to hook me with her writing, with incredible wit and subtlety, as a review on the back said. We followed three very key cases, all of which were inextricably intertwined. It's a small town, clearly, everyone is up in everyone's business, and a fabulous mystery unfolded.

My only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is that it, for me, was a bit of a slow start. Let it be noted that by the end it was really unputdownable, and in my hand in any free moment. On to the next and grateful to not have to wait a year for the next one to come out, its right on my bookshelf!

Kate Atkinson knows how to present a series of many, seemingly unconnected and disparate characters and sew all their stories together tidily and with humor and forgiveness, but little sentimentality. At first it's a little disconcerting (where's she going with this?) but by now I've read enough of her books that I can relax and enjoy the unfolding of a well-written yarn, and trust that she won't leave me in the lurch.
