Mixed bag…the best stuff is really some of the best ever written. A Clean, Well-Lighted Place. Our nada, etc. Perfect story. But others can be a slog, especially the war ones, I hate to say. Even within a good story, it can be a slog to reach the good stuff—e.g.: The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Brief Happy Life of Francis Macomber. The “almost stupid genius” (Lockwood) of Hemingway so often does not have space to breathe in the endless explanations of wars and games. Still, the quality of his prose is undeniable on a sentence level, particularly his world-class dialogue.

I did not expect this to be a series of short stories- but as it was, I really enjoyed it.
It was quite clear that the tales in the book were quite autobiographical- with details altered, which gave an interesting insight into Hemingway's passion for life in India and on the safari. Good quick read- not a summer favorite.

I remembered liking Hemmingway’s The Sun Also Rises, and so I thought I would give this a chance. But I hated it. I don’t think I recognized the overdone angst of how difficult it is to be a man in the highest of class of privilege nor any incredibly sexist attitudes towards women in The Sun Also Rises, but this collection of stories was utterly dripping with the #firstworldproblems #whitemanproblems and #idon’tunderstandprivelage hashtags that it was difficult to finish. Thankfully, it was short.
