I feel like it was a really great sequel!! It brought new ideas to the table, and left it open for future books. The author did a great job and being consistent with the first book too. I got really attached to Speaker, so much so that I lowkey cried when he said he was gonna likely be disassembled.
Anyway, I hope that Edward Ashton continues with this series, it’s becoming one of my favorites!

The first book had a compelling backstory for the narrator as well "flashbacks" explaining the history of their space faring civilization. It felt a bit light on plot but offered sufficient character development and world building to hint at more to come in a sequel.
This follow-up lacks all the nuances that made its predecessor seem promising. Everyone (sometimes including Mickey) is just a shallow snarky caricature. Any tension or intrigue is caused by miscommunication with the Speaker and no attempts are made to flesh out the fauna of Niflheim. There's no arcs or structure and the protagonist just randomly bumbles their way to success.
