ooph. Probably didn't do the book any favors to read it right after the previous one (which is a sad statement in it of itself). But when you consume them both in quick succession, you realize how threadbare the story-telling is, how none of the characters develop, how every single character talks in exactly the same voice (you can swap the names in basically any of the book's conversations and nothing changes). Even the super weird alien intelligence gets some nice plot woo-woo so they can talk exactly like all the other characters . . .
Pretty sure that neither of these books passes the Bechdel test. There are two female characters who actually have foreground roles. "Somehow" they both end with feelings for our main character. There is a conversation where they threaten each other with violence over the right to his body. And that's about it. Yeah, at times these books can feel like an incel's masturbatory fantasy.
Not quite as bad as Armada, so two stars and not one.

Like the first book, it's an enjoyable sci-fi read, but this time the humans sucked a bit more in their interactions with each other, which really took me out of it. These are hand-picked space explorers, not sullen teenagers with a bad attitude.
If I was being honest, I'd give it 2 stars. But what you should know about me is that I'm a sucker for cute guys, and Speaker is exactly my kind of guy

I loved the fast paced nature of book two. From the jump, Mickey is embroiled in a sticky situation that just gets stickier and stickier. I LOVED Speaker so much. I hope there is another novel. There is not a whole lot of character development in the main group, but still enough surprises to keep me hooked.
