Dick Francis

Not his best, but I will never say anything bad about Dick Francis.

Not Francis' usual setting - there were horse racing arenas but only just. The focus was on weather patterns, physics and flight.

An interesting mystery none the less, and I did appreciate the characters!

Usual stylish, fast moving Dick Frances mystery

This time, Dick Francis's hero is a meteorologist caught up in situations beyond his control. Francis is a master of the Everyman hero and this is no exception. Not one of his very best, but good enough indeed.

Dick Francis is one of my go-to authors for when I want to read without having to think too much. Semi-plausible plot, structurally similar, happy ending.

This, however, is easily the worst thing I've ever read from him. Utterly disorganised, entirely implausible, just simply makes no sense.

I quit about 2/3rds of the way through, and for most of that I was just plugging on hoping it would start to make sense at some point.

Perfect example of a book being sold simply because of who wrote it as a cynical example of how valuable a track record is.

Awful.

Dick Francis without a lot of horses is more interesting to me: not a whit more believable, but entertaining. This is in the "keep throwing yourself into the mouth of danger until you come out holding an answer" school of mystery novel. I did like our hero's grandmother, a lot. I'd read a book about her.

If you’re expecting a “Castaway” or “Lord of the Flies” stranded-on-an-island type book, you’re not going to get it with this. That part is actually very short.
The book has complicated phrasing at times and, for me at least, the characters were confusing and it was difficult to tell them apart, even by the end of the book.
Also, the love interest is so forced, it’s almost not even worth having in the story to begin with.
I picked this up, on and off, for months because it was difficult to get into. I thoroughly enjoy the occasional Dick Francis novel but this is definitely not one of his better ones. At least it’s a fairly short read, though.

Not my favorite Dick Francis book. Less believable.

Well, not one of my favorites. Yes, it's full of action but...where are the horses???
