Before I start this review, I just wanted to note my first thoughts when I read the first chapter of this novel;

" I read the first chapter, and already I have gotten a code to solve. I struggled with it but it reminded me why I love Deltora Quest so much!

This reminded me of my childhood and I'm just so glad I didn't read all the series at once, so one day I could dive into this world again and love it just as much as I did when I was a child.
Once I started getting into the book, I flew through it! Hopefully, I can finish the rest of this series before the year ends (but then there will be no more Deltora! ...Since I accidentally read the spin-off series already).
One thought that I did have, however, was "Was this series this violent when I read it so young?" I was surprised because some of the things in this book made me cringe...and I read this series eight years ago!

I love how we get to grow with Lief, Barda and Jasmine and get their full thoughts instead of only one perspective. I'm finding it a struggle, however to remember some of the characters (besides the main three, of course); like Lindal. I don't remember her at all from the other books, but Emily Rodda made sure we didn't feel completely left out as I still felt like I had a strong relationship with her character
Spoiler and was quite upset when we thought she had died.

An amazing novel and brought me back to my childhood. Now, onto book two!

And more Deltora... Reading this book with my son has been a fun experience.

This is a great series for young readers. I read it when I was in college, but still loved it. My favorite part of these books is that there are little puzzles and riddles that the heroes must solve in order to complete their quests and the reader can take part in solving them on their own before reading ahead.

These are the third group of books in Rodda's larger series of Deltora Quest. While the reader can read these without reading the first two groups of books, I think as a whole they are more interesting with an understanding of the whole background. I read the Dragons of Deltora books first and there were parts I didn't really understand as much, because while Rodda touches on past events through flashbacks or subtle summaries, without having read the other groups of books the reader doesn't understand the real importance of the event. So I would highly suggest reading Deltora Quest and Deltora Shadowlands first.

Overall, this is a great series.

And we are back for quest number three, and well these has been an 8 book series, and a 3 book series, now? Well there are four doo-dads they need to find blah blah, so its a four book series then.
And so the journey begins, succinct, but you get the feeling this well is beginning to run dry.
Deltora Quest #12
Emily Rodda #19

Deltora Quest + dragons? Yes please. This is the first book of the third Deltora Quest series, beginning the last quest to save Deltora and defeat the Shadow Lord. I'm just really loving how as the series progresses, the issues the characters face are slightly darker and more complex and there is further exploration of what is happening to the world and land around them as a result of the enemy's actions. And of course, the riddles have returned, along with familiar heroes, creatures and enemies. I really wish I had have read this as a kid, but alas our public library only had the first series... it's been a lot of fun to revisit the world as an adult.

We enjoyed this installment just as much as the others, although it's a bit more gruesomely vivid that previous installments. Looking forward to the next book.
