Hooked

This is an ARC book

I thought this book was very cute. It had all of the elements of the classic romance.

However, from the synopsis - I was expecting a little more sass and witty banter from the main the two characters. It was very mellow and insta-love. It was still a good quick read that makes me want to continue learning about the other players on the hockey team - or even Miranda's sister :)

This book was okay, but I kept waiting to get really excited for it. Unfortunalty, by the end I only kept reading because I made it that far already.

4.5 stars -- I received a free copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review/opinion.

OK, this was way more than I was expecting from this book! I don't even know why...I hadn't reread the blurb since I requested it a few months ago, so I honestly didn't remember what this book was even about! And quite frankly that blurb doesn't even do this book justice. This book had so many layers, and the characters were really interesting and flawed, and I just LOVED going on their romantic journey with them.

Miranda was sassy and strong and independent and a bit cynical about men, but I really just loved her. I got behind pretty much all of her decisions and reactions. And I honestly believed her slow falling for Jake. Which is funny because I was NOT a fan of Jake at the beginning. He was such an angry, dickish jerk!! He was exactly what Miranda calls him. And yes, he amused me, but I didn't see how I was going to love him...honestly, I was a bit sad b/c I wasn't sure how the book was going to go. But then Ms. Rothert brilliantly starts showing us little bits of MORE to Jake, and I was intrigued. I started to see why he is the way he is, and while it doesn't excuse his behavior, I got it. And I really loved that his personality didn't just turn around on a dime...he was still kind of a dickish jerk, even right til the end. It was just that we got to see that there was more to him. Heck, I think even *he* got to see there was more to him if that makes sense. It was like Miranda opened up a piece of his heart and showed him all that was underneath. I LOVED seeing all his vulnerable sides. While I didn't cry, I definitely teared up at so many moments in this book. I was not expecting that!! But I really got the feels. And seeing him make such an effort with Miranda to be romantic, he kind of made me swoon.

The other girl thing was odd. It was a bit crazier than I was expecting. But it didn't necessarily detract from the story, and I appreciated the way it all played out in the end (and how Miranda handled him, and that it didn't drag out).

All in all this was a serious surprise win for me. Especially given such flawed characters. But I just love everywhere this story went, and I was just happy to be along for the ride. Will definitely be looking for more from this author in the future.

Hooked is a sexy and funny romantic read! I devoured this book and didn't want it to end. I loved that the story is told from both main characters points of views. It really helped heighten the emotions and make Jake and Miranda more relatable. There are swoons and sexy times (ahem, parking garage!), but also laughs and just the right amount of drama and angst.

Jake and Miranda are great individually, but together they're amazing! I loved how independent and driven Miranda was. She didn't let her go of her own goals and stayed true to herself throughout the entire book. I was glad that she spoke her mind and challenged Jake by always calling him out on his behavior. Her refusal to let Jake just come to her financial rescue only made me respect her more and heightened the connection between our characters. Yes, there was great chemistry and a physical attraction between Jake and Miranda, but their friendship and relationship progressed naturally and didn't feel rushed. I liked that they each struggled to battle their demons and relationship fears. On the outside they live very different lives, but as you peel the layers back, you see how they actually really complement each other.

Jake initially comes across as an arrogant jerk, but as the story progresses, you see that it's really a mask and that he has put up a wall around his heart. You realize just how vulnerable and sweet he is and this ups the swoons exponentially. Yes, he makes mistakes, but he owns up to them and resolves things maturely with Miranda, showing how true and deep his feelings run. All of his hockey rituals and superstitions were fun to read about too, though wearing the same game socks repeatedly during a streak sounds pretty terrible!

The epilogue was perfect and I loved getting that glimpse of the future. I would love to read more about Jake and Miranda, or her sister Paige, who provided some great comic relief (ahem, getting woken up by books falling onto your head!) If you're looking for a funny and sexy read that's high on swoons and low on drama, you don't want to miss Hooked!

I received this ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The rich playboy and impoverished-but-hardworking heroine isn't my favorite trope, but I was up for trying a hockey romance so I gave it a go. This isn't the first in the series, but works well as a standalone. I haven't checked, but I assume that Tuck and Carrie are featured in a previous book. I'll certainly be checking it out.

I liked Miranda from the start. She's diligent about her studies, and does her best at both of her jobs. I've been there myself. It's not easy, but if you want it badly enough and you have friends and family in your corner, it can be done. She wasn't overly dramatic about the possible consequences of becoming involved with Jake, but she acknowledged them and explained them to him rather than whine about it to herself. She wasn't totally bowled over by him at the start either, and I'm glad about that because Jake was a complete jerk at the beginning. I wasn't even sure he could be redeemed, but he developed at a decent pace and in a believable way.

There weren't a lot of power plays going on where the rich and powerful man forces his attention or money or protection on the weak and protesting woman. Jake offered, but when Miranda refused and explained why, he pretty much accepted it. He didn't like it, but he wasn't a pain about it. I think that might be one aspect of this trope that I don't care for, and a big reason why this one worked for me as well as it did. Also, the conflicts that provided tension seemed reasonable and played out quite well. Structurally, I liked how this story was put together. It wasn't a huge emotional ride for me, but I liked it a lot and I'll definitely look for others in this series. Oh, and I liked the hockey bits too.

OMG THIS SOUNDS SO GOOD. I CAN'T WAIT TO READ IT!!!

I like this book, read it. Recommend recommend :)
