This is peak Anne Rice. I had forgotten much of what happens in Lestat’s backstory; everything about his character moving forward makes so much sense. His family history, his turning, the theater, his relationship with Nicki- it’s all so incredibly tragic. Anne Rice’s tendency to write a lengthy flash back, within a flash back, within a flash back is impressive if you don’t find it annoying. Whatever pitfalls her writing style may sometimes have, Lestat absolutely steals the show with his larger than life personality. His tears, his impulsivity, his passion, his vanity. Bisexual rock star icon The Brat Prince Lestat de Lioncourt will always be my favorite vampire!

4.25/5 stars

I enjoyed this quite a bit more than the first book. The characters and setting are much more complex and the narrative flows much better.

Lestat’s Oedipus complex kind of detracted from the plot for me but the ending was much more satisfying than Vampire’s.
