this is a good book, better than interview, but I think it would have benefited from less Marius exposition and more action; the beginnings with human Lestat and the epilogue with the concert were the best parts because they moved quickly and were engaging. I think this book suffers from too much philosophical waxing, just like the first one. that said, I like lestat, Armand is still my precious angel gremlin, and I am excited to read QOTD, also can I just say FUCK MARIUS!!!

In my opinion the book is engaging until it gets to the middle, which is somewhat of a slog. The parts with Armand picked things up a bit, but it still drags on until Marius's appearance. There the reader gets more worldbuilding and lore (which imo didn't feel like too much exposition at one time), and everything begins to build up speed until the climax at the end of the book.

Louis appears again in this book, and it is nicer to see him from an external perspective, as his internal narrative was heavy in Interview. There is a great cast of new characters featured in this book, as well, which I'm hyped to see more of in the next book.

It definitely very different to the first Vampire Chronicles book (Interview with the Vampire). Lestat’s overall personality makes the book very entertaining and the way that he approaches different situations and feelings can open up sorrow and humour at the same time I found.
The narrative is slow at the beginning but once Lestat moves to Paris, the book does feel like it starts to get going more. There are occasions where I felt the story was a bit stuck and bland sometimes but I understand that they were important to develop the plot.

This book is dark, hilarious, and captured the spirit of Lestat perfectly. I love Interview, but this one went by so much faster and is definitely my favorite of the first 3 of the series. If you want to read the horrific (genuinely, horrific) tale of a whiny and overdramatic vampire, this is the book for you. Pretty fast paced at times but can slow down, I can honestly say the only part I did not enjoy was the 70 pages or so near the end that Marius wouldn't stfu.
