Reread in preparation to starting the follow-up that I finally got. That's a recommendation all by itself.

How do you think the world will end?
The first issue gives the impression that this might be ye olde horror story with its cliche "this is how it all started" intro and a massive exposition dump to introduce the large amount of characters, but man did this turn out to be GOOD.
The story constantly subverts expectations, and the art is fantastic. It switches from a scribbly art style to a highly detailed painted art style in more intense scenes. It's just really unsettling and well executed.
I can't say much about the story without spoiling anything, and this graphic novel is best experienced going in blind, so if you're interested you should definitely just go buy this volume. Though the writing isn't perfect, it's definitely one of the most entertaining reads this year.

Very mixed feelings on this which all level out to this being a solid 3 star book. Maybe 3.5 stars.
The characters were very bland and same-y. This made them difficult to connect to or care about for the most part. This is primarily a writing issue but the often murky art doesn't help.
There are a lot of great horror elements here which I really liked but it felt like they weren't used super effectively.
It's a little too wordy for me, especially with the full page text sections that JT4 sneaks in. Some of these feel like they help the plot and others feel as if they're a trick to sneak in more text on one page rather than showing us the actual action.
There's a trans woman in this that, through plot 'necessity' flashback gets continuously deadnamed and misgendered. Now, I get it, if you have flashbacks then she is going to be presenting differently but this felt a little off coming from a cis white man. Additionally, I love reading books with tons of queer rep but you can tell when its natural and when it's forced and this cast of characters leans a little more toward the forced end.
Overall interesting but not sure if I'd continue reading if it ends up being a very long series.

Spooky. It's existential horror, kind of. It takes place in "Upstate" Wisconsin. As a Wisconsinite I was very insulted at that. NO ONE CALLS THE NORTH WOODS THAT. But there are little things that those who know the north woods would notice that others wouldn't, it adds to the horror in a very good way. I really enjoyed how each of the characters get a bit of backstory on how they meant Walter. Probably gonna read and finish Vol 2 tomorrow. (Dear future me, they misrepresent Wisconsin on purpose)
